Free Designable Resource Engine
There shouldn't be just the "ols" three resources available. Food, Production and trade aren't enough. But I also think that there shouldn't be any premade system. One should be able to insert as many resources as wanted. On this way, there is a better possibility given to create a Colonization scenario. Anyone of you ever played Colonization ? One could also just make a new resource called MAGIC and then make the choices on which terrain it can produced, etc. This counts of course for every resource.

Isn't that much more intelligent than to bother about magic included or not and change science to magic in scenarios?

Any further suggestions in this direction?

This is not a bad idea, but I think that one concern should be raised. If such a system is implemented then we could probably have to say goodbye to portability of the game. If for example you customize your game engine to have a magic resource for the creation of a fantasy scenario, than magic will still appear when you play a regular game or when you play a WWII scenario.

Nevertheless, such a system could offer many advantages such as increased flexibility in the modern times, when the player could create the solar energy resource or the hydro-energy resource that would appear only on the rivers. It would however have to be very carefully implemented for the purposes of game balance, for any twinkling with the resource model will totally shift the resource balance.

Why? When we use scenario folders, then this problem wouldn't occur. I wanted to say that we should be able to create new resources for the scenarios, as we could also do for the free game. Your problem would only occur when we don't use scenario folders, what we will do as I expect...

In civ2 you could already alter the graphics files and rules files so that the behaviour and appearance of the resource were changed.

And also, Andz83, you mentioned colonisation. What aspect of it did you mean in relation to resources? BTW - I love the game, and still play it even today.

what aspect I meant about the resources? Man, you have about 20 resources there, I think. More than in civ. And I think in CivIII you should be able to create timber, ore, silver, sugar etc. if you want to create a colonization scenario.
I also play it very often. But not very successful.

I like having different resources. I want to have cities specialized, desert cities for manufacturing, mountain cities for cutting trees and mining iron and bauxite, coastal cities for shipping. I'm pretty sure this idea will be in Civ3 because of the trade system is going to get an overhaul I think. Did Firaxis confirm that yet?
