It's okay. 5 out of 10.

Corrects something, doesn't correct other things, does funky things with the population-figure font.

Yes, it is worth it. It fixes the corruption problem and several typos along with several other tweeks. I highly recommend it.

If you're running XP, I'd recommend not installing it. I did and the game has not run since. And the game will not uninstall or reinstall. So it cannot be played, unfortunately.

Other people running XP have not had problems, but I'm just passing along my experiences.

Re: Is the patch any good
It's worth the download, assuming you're not running a 2400-baud modem. It fixes some minor gameplay issues, and apparently (I say, not having encountered them) some major technical issues.

Unfortunately it still leaves many major gameplay issues unsolved and many of the minor gameplay issues as well. The 5/10 is about right, but I think we're still some time away from having a full version of Civ3.

They modified it, but it still sucks.

I've got cities only 20 or so 'squares' from a forbidden palace and the corruption is so rife that even with *every* building they are only producing 1 good shield and 1 commerce.

A good three quarters of my empire have rife corruption, and this is under a bloody democracy with well placed FP and Capital. It's silly, really, really, silly.

Apparently, according to Firaxis, All of the cities in the US of A are rife with corruption the further from Washington they are.

No, the patch hardly touches corruption at all. You'll not notice it.

Its worth mentioning the change theyve made to Communism too.
My Chinese Commies who are nearing on a Domination victory have most of thier cities with a reasonable amount of production that isnt being wasted due to corruption.
Natch they all have Courthouses and Police Stations.

Actually, because I was quite spread out, I figured that switching to Communism may help ... even out the corruption. I went through 8 turns of Anarchy only to find it even bloody worse! I couldn't get out of Communism fast enough.

I wish there was some way of determining if an alternative government would be beneficial or not.

Bring back the Civ2 concept of changing government any number of times within the single turn of getting out of Anarchy?

Only thing I don't understand, the patch seems to make the AI incredibly miserly!

I keep asking them to trade me 100000000 gold for absolutely nothing, and the stingy @#%$s won't give it to me!

No, IMHO the patch is not worth it because of the new tech-trading bug it causes. This really pisses me off! How can you play when the AI does trading during your turn?!

I think that they got it just about right. If they reduce corruption any further then in above patch, the whole concept of corruption becomes meaningless. Just build the Forbidden city mini-wonder also. If you think its too expensive; just reduce the build-costs from 300 to 200 shields through that CivMod-editor.

Remember that courthouses reduces both shield and trade-corruption. The combined benefit + the increased resistance against propaganda & cultural city-overtakings, makes courthouses worthwhile. I build them in every foreign border-city and in cities far away from the Capitol & the city with the Forbidden city-Wonder.

I think the patch is worth it. On a standard map I still had pretty usable cities (maybe 50% corruption or so) on other continents that were a good distance from my capital. These cities were pretty useless before the patch. However, there is still a point where once you get too far away from your capital the cities are worthless.

Also, one big plus from the patch is you can turn off having to watch the AI move. This goes for your automated workers as well as the AI's units. Considering I used spend 2-3 minutes between turns watching the AI move all its crap around (and mine), I'd say this feature alone is worth the patch download.

Yes, the turn speed is much nicer, but not quite there yet. I love the game, but I still get bored during the Modern Era.

Quick question - can you use the editor without a specialised map? I thought I remembered doing it, but I was trying to do it again yesterday to try out the new editor features and can't seem to. Anyone know how, or if it's not possible?

Thanks.

You use the editor and create a random map in there.
You change some setting and save to "Bignick.bic"
Then you start civ3, take scenario and then pick the first setting. You can change the map how you like it and it will create again a random map for you with your setting.

About the patch...

9/10
Install it!
I have Windows XP and I don't have any problems with the game. Only thing I would rather to change back is the contact governor! That sucks now.

Even more simple : edit civ3mod.bic, and all you future games will have the modified rules by default (just make sure to have a backup copy of the file in case you want be back to the default rules of the original game).

It crashes my game if I try to load a pre-patch save, and in my current game it crashed when a city converted over to me and I chose "Great. Install a new governor."
