Cool AI's
I have come up with the coolest idea for AI's. I got most of this from Perfect Dark's AI system for N64, and figured something out that can apply to Civ 3. First, you have your usual difficulty. Second, you can also customize their personality. There would be 2 categories in which you can combine the two traits in each one: City-building behavior and attitude. The first category would have expansionist and perfectionist. The second category would have war-like and peaceful. So you can have a peaceful perfectionist or an expansionist who loves wars. It's up to you. So what do you guys think?

Hasn't this already been included in civ and civII

I mean there we had perfectionist/expansionist, agressiv/rational and civilized/militaristic behaviour. Isn't it the same?

The perfectionist/expansionist thing's already in Civ2's rules.txt

But I have a slightly different view on AI - they should be in the form of script files, and the game would ship with default versions. It should be done like this so that players would then be able to customise the scripts or even write their own. I've said before that I hope the AI's would be so good that we'd be able to have a best AI contest, where people can desgin AIs and pitt them against each other, with the result hopefully being some enthralling contests.

UltraSonix are you my unknown twin or something? We seem to agree on just about everything.

A tournament played only by AIs would be incredibly cool (provided the AIs were good enough). It would be like watching a customizable war movie.

Also, good documentation is a must. We need to understand how the AIs actually work to program a good one.

Orange don't forget us down here, if you do I might have to start posting in the off topic again to become a prince too. I don't like the off topic though...

OrangeSfwr, where is the Forum Filter to See Only VIP's (Very Important Princes) messages?

I'm ready to set this on ASAP. Yes, I know I will stop to read my own messages too, but they are mostly meaningless anyway!

Back (almost) serius:
Ultrasonix, I'm really amazed every time people here suggest to make AI by scripts that player can program better than Firaxis default.

I mean, I always supposed good AI was a kind of Sacro Graal for any really smart programmer, but now I realize almost every Apolytoner know how to make it work very well, only they kept it as a secret!

Heh, Adm.Naismith, how do you suppose a person gets good at AI scripting. By test writing his/her own scripts, of course!

I am forced to live with Firaxis default because I don't know how to code and am too lazy to learn. I hope they put good AI in.

another mighty master to hail .

now about the topic . I would like to see more options of AI sides than that boolean yes/no 1/0 option that we had in the rules.txt. like not 2 options but 4 . and they could change with time . the US an Imperialist during the early 20th century is now .... OK bad example .... well lets say... UK . during the 17th-middle 20th centuries they were imperialists now they are perfectionists....

P.S. remember I am just a Chieftain . so dont answer .....

P.P.S. how much posts do I need for getting "my Warlord " ?

Just 18 more lowly Chieftan. ::sigh:: it's a good thing I'm such a nice prince, if I were like Andz I wouldn't acknowledge your futile cries for my help. :: pats back ::

(just kidding of course )

Yah, I like the idea of the AI changing settings. The most effective game play would be expansionalist/militaristic and late in the game it would be perfectionist/civilized. I'd like to see the AI switch, obviously you'll switch throughout the game, and the AI should know this by how you play, not by what your Civ is "known" for.

I know that this would probably be too hard to do but maybe the AI could learn from your past styles of playing (it'll probably have to cheat to do this or something). eg If you tend to be an all-out science guy, then the AI goes expansionist-militaristic.

Hm.

I don't think the AI should remember your playing style across games, i.e., what it learns about you should be carried forward to another game. However, it should learn about you in a game and adjust its playing style accordingly.

There was a very interesting game called Castle -- IIRC -- for the Atari 800 (not sure if it was available for other computers). The interesting thing about it is there are a number of players in the game and you can "train" them by playing a number of games. It would be cool if you can train AI players in Civ 3, but the difference is each game in Castlelasted about 30 minutes, not 30 days

As a player of Total Annhilation, I can tell you that customizable AIs do wonders for spicing up a game and keeping it young. I would like to see settings such as bribe/no bribe (for units and cities), sneak attack/no sneak attack, build at least x cities then go perfectionist, etc. At least some of the settings that appear to be level-dependent should be included, for people like me that play King because they like an AI that can fight dirty, but won't play deity because unhappiness problems are more annoying than challenging.

As for Andz, well, I remember when he was just a settler (joined a day after me). Orange, you may have less posts, but you've been here longer than either of us, and that means more in my book...
