Question about EU

I just bought the original EU and I have a question, in the Grand Campaign, is there any way to play as a nation that is not one of the sheilds on the top? I thought that i would be able to play as anyone.

There is a patch/crack I think. Check out the Paradox website.

For some reason there is not a thriving EU community here.
