I am bumping this thread on the hopes that people will see it and respond to it; so that it doesn't get buried by the competing thread without the survey.

Apparently, playing SMACX shows the wisdom of age And next year I will move to the group with relative majority.

Yesterday, I received my copy of Alien Crossfire

Adjusted Statistics
Heres the results of some geeky maths which show the actual age distribution.
(The problem with the poll is each group does not cover the same number of years, the 11-17 group covers just 6 years, and the 35-49 group covers 14 years, so the sample range for the 35-49 is more than twice as large, anyway, the long and the short of it is the statistics lie a bit)

Adjusted statistics: (maths to get results ommitted)
0-11: 0%
11-17 : 26%
18-24 : 29%
25-34 : 27%
35-49 : 17%
50-75 : 1%

If drawn as a curve this would show a peak in the 18-24 group, so the best represented age is 18-24.
It is meaningfull to say that "It is almost twice as likely that a given AC-G/H/S'er will be 20 than 40"
However the distribution is really quite even from about 15 - 35

As a rating of maturity the poll grouping works quite well, as it could easily be argued there is less maturity difference between a 40 and 45 year old than a 15 and 20 year old.

Do I expect you to care?

No, I expect you to die!

I agree that the groupings are not uniform and that the results may therefore be a bit misleading. But that does not change the results. If 16 out of 53 people are 35-49 years old (the current results as I post this), then that is indeed 30.19% of the total as it says at the top, not 17% as you said. 16 is not 17% of 53.

I probably should have emphasised that the statistics I gave were the age distribution. If you graphed my figures as a histograph the area would acurrately represent the distribution of ages, while if you graphed the poll results directely you would get an almost entirely meaningless graph (altough, such graphs do turn up, because they are technically correct and potentially misleading - usfull for when you need to lie with statistics).

So, the poll results are correct, but they are also misleading.
For example, you could easily be forgiven for making a conclusion like "There are more 40 year olds than 20 year olds on AC-G/H/S" (on the basis of 20%, 29% respective), altough said conclusion is entirely inaccurate.

Or, IOW, the poll results are correct, but lie

I'd be interested to see your math. (I'm an engineer; I can handle it.)

Hey, I just copied the age ranges that the one poster mentioned they used for the Civ III poll - I wanted to be consistent with that poll. The bigger problem with this poll, is that if you're 50 you're not allowed to vote.
