Evolution
It would be interesting if they could have a research tree that would allow a race that followed a certain research path or cultural path to evolve into a higher form.

I may be wrong, but I believe that is one of the possible endings to SMAC.

That's right, tniem, but should we have it in Civ3? If Sweep of Time will have some kind of link to SMAC, this won't be necessary, but as far as I have understood, this will not be reality. Firaxis just want to collect them in one box, nothing more.

i think that such things as "evolve to a higher life-form" should remain where they belong: SMAC!

while i'm not against going somewhat into future tech in civ3, we shouldn't exagerate it. Civ3 should maybe end in 2100 or so. evolution needs much more time. we don't need it in civ3.

I just don't think it is very practical to have humans evolve into a higher form in Civ III.

The game will probably end around 2040. Does anyone really think that humans will evolve into a higher form in the next 40 years? I for one don't. Sure we may have cloning or can manipulate genetics, but that doesn't make us a higher form in my opinion.

[Nitpicking mood]

Ehm... Evolution is not a sufficient word for expressing "ascension into a higher life form". Civilization, as about any other strategy game, is about the survival of the fittest. But not about evolution.

And anyway, ascensions should be kept to SMAC. Though of course you can make another ending; The idea of transcension on Earth has already been expressed as an alternative for the Alpha Centauri Journey. I don't really know myself, how much difference would there be in those endings?
