Let the good times roll on
i been thinking, should you able to enter an era through research?

the world enter eras through major events & science alone didn't begin new eras such as the industrial revolution or the imperialist era. what i am aiming at is that there should be conditions in a civ that would bring the civ in a new era & other rival civs would follow

example: england has the 3 major factors for industrialization;land, capital & labor. as the industrialization in english takes off it would soon spread to other rivals such as US, France & Germany

it sounds stupid but if you think about it adds realism to the game

I kinda like this idea. But it is still kind of confusing, make it more organized.

This age thing doesn't belong to civ. It certainly is stupid if researched like in ctp, but I don't think there should be any other method to insert it in the game. AoE is different.

are you crazy? this thing belongs in civ3 cuz the damn game is all about building civs up & advancing them through the ages. in short some sort of conditions should be put in

As for Diablo, what explaining do you need?

This reminds me a lot of how Microsoft's Age of Empires II works.

For example in order for a civilization to advance into another "age" certain events have to be accomplished first:
1. Completed the neccessary research advances (of course).
2. Have a certain size of overall civilization population.
3. Had to have already built certain city improvements.
4. Possibly have to pay a certain amount of gold in order to fund the advancement of your civilization over to the next age or era.

This way a civilization has to do more than just research certain advances inorder to enter another age

edit: typo

Who cares? It does not do anything for the came. In Ctp1 & 2. all it does is change what your city looks like.

this doesn't belong in civ because it is YOU who determines what to do when and we don't need any superimposed schemes that mess up the idea of historical accuracy. AoE is different because it simply is not a civilization leading game.

But AoE does follow the common sense logic that you need to build certain improvements before you can build certain units or move on to another era. Notice I didn't use "age" however age and era to me are one and the same

Gunpowder and mobile warfare renders the barracks obsolete, do they not? You need new barracks to buikd new units. (without the barracks, they are not veterans, I know) You can use your imagination to think that those certain improvements to build certain units are already in the game, then. Also, since I hate it in Civ II, I don't look at it but in the city view screen of Civ I, granaries and barracks change shape in the later stages of the game. They are adjusted to the new era. The maintanence cost you pay for those improvements include their constant upgrading, and when you discover a new tech, that's when you enter a new "era", in that particular field.
