New? Idea
You should need to have certain buildings in order to build certain units. Police need police station, artillary, tanks and airplane need manufactoring plant, ambulance units need hospital, what else? Post your ideas here

I disagree - makes the game too realistic or complicated.

I'm for historical realism, but only to an extent.

I agree with MrFun. Once trade becomes commonplace it is quite likely that the different components be they weapons, armour, ammunition etc are built in different parts of the country then shipped to wherever construction takes place, particularly if units require population in Civ 3. You wouldn't want to recruit everyone in your main industrial centers.

I dont agree with Mr.fun. We need civ3 to be as realistic as possible.

heres my list of units-with buildings:

1. Standard Infantry (mostly just marines and alpine troops) - Boot Camp. Boot camp would be like a barracks, except it would train new recruits.
2. Tanks - Steal factory. Steal factorys would be like manufacturing plants.
3. Planes - Steal Factory.
4. Ships - Dry Docks.
5. Missiles - Missile Silo.

I just don't think that it is important to have a building to create every type of unit. What happens if we have a unit workshop? Do we need a gun shop and a boot camp to build a rifleman?

The only way that this idea could be implemented is that it would allow you to build a ship while also building a tank and that Airstrip you wanted all in the same city at the same time.

Keep this in mind: the more realistic and complicated you make something, the more difficult it will be to make the AI act competent. And as CTP2 shows, you can do lots of stuff right - but if the AI is not a challenge and is incapable of using a highly realistic system (CTP2 diplomacy anyone) then the game is shelfware.

As realistic as possible. Yeah right. Good thing you're not on the design team.

Anyway, the idea is hardly new. Try Master of Magic or Heroes of Might and Magic where the idea works quite well, and effectively slows down ICS.

There is one point made that I totally agree with - in order to build ships you should have a dock/dry dock built first...how else was it launched?

I think Jer8m8's idea is good... but to answer New idea?, it has been posed before.

I dont see why people do not like this; it is in Starcraft and Age of Empires and makes more realism.

Try colonization needed a drydock to build ships, needed amoury to build cannons.I think this is a good idea but shouldn't be too indepth with only 5 or 6 buildings being necessary to build every unit.

The question becomes with different buildings is it a different building for each unit? Or do you need a barracks for any foot soldiers, a dock for ships, and an airstrip for airplanes?

If its the later and it plays well than I would not be against it. But if is like:

quote:

5. Missiles - Missile Silo.

than it would seem to be to many buildings just to build some units.
