They'll just stuff it up by adding new, dumb 'improvements'.

I would buy an update if it was only graphics changed, but that is unlikely.

If it was left to Firaxis, it would definitely be a bomb. I would trust Brian Reynolds though.

The things it would need, in order of importance:
1) New and improved AI.

2) New and improved diplomacy system.

3) More detailed and advanced trading system.

3) Wider selection of ships, with more detailed usage.

4) More resources, for both trade and construction.

5) More buildings and construction possibilities for cities.

6) Wider and more varied selection of land units.

And, improved graphics is a given.

so ... more like Civ then? (apart from number 3 i s'pose)

seriously though, i think you're right. i used to play loads and loads of Col when it came out, but when i reinstalled it recently it didn't have the same magic. perhaps all it needs is a bit of updating...

i'd look forward to Col2 more than i would to Civ4

Not sure how specifically to accomplish this, but they'd need to do something about that draggy stretch where you've got your economy set up, you don't want to start any new cities, but you can't start the revolution until your fortresses are built and tory sentiment is minimal.

I think that would be solved by making the AI better, and having more interaction with the other colonial powers and natives.

Exactly! If you happen to be a C++ programmer interesting in creating and coding a sequel to Colonization (with new features and some changes) have a look at the forum and tell everyone that you are a coder!
The Col2 Project used to be quite active but then our only coder didn't have time for it anymore (he already created a mapview where units can be moved). So things have considerably slowed down.

So if anyone is interested in coding tell us! Of course everyone is welcome to post ideas or make comments...

I remember one thing I wished for when playing it was that it would continue beyond independence, that the society and science would actually make progress and develope into modern America, with scyscrapers and all.

And perhaps more domestic matters, foundation of states, etc.

Perhaps for another game, but still cool.
