First, we found out that one of the subs has a major dent on its hull (the Brits naturally say it must have happened after the sub left the lot).

Now two of the subs are in drydock with cracked engine valves.

Seesh, you'd think the Canadian navy would have checked this stuff out.

Yup. It's not like there's anything to hit; just miles and miles of igloos and polar bears.

It's important to give your children quality toys to play with. I imagine that the polar bears make for interesting targets since they move more than an igloo would.

BTW, our COB told the whole crew that Victorians are very nice and like Americans...but they don't like you if you get sloppy drunk. I found they were just the same either way. Pretty cool actually. Had a great time in this bar that had peanuts where you throw the shells on the floor.

I doubt you would have gotten clearance to nuke Vancouver, no matter what was happening...

They must be lonely then.

What the heck is a PAL? Personally (Presidentially?) Authorised Launch?

Passive Authorization Links? Can't remember exactly. Basically something that prevents a local commander from launching, shooting. Anyway, none of the nukes in the USN had this until ~1991.

Now the boomer class boats have this.

Always required remote authorization anyway, and there are 2 person controls and all sorts of stuff. Watch Crimson Tide. It's not bad...

Some parts pretty realistic. The galley fire for instance. Some very technical parts of the authentication procedure were slightly off. Also the breakdown in discipline (mutiny by the XO) and the dog are kinda over the top. I do know some COs who were even scarier than Gene Hackman, though...(in personality).

All in all, pretty good slice of life depiction. the premise is a little off though. And if they got a launch authorization, they would launch. (Hackman is right in the movie...)
