Hopefully they are careful where they get their Hackmans from.

But seriously, if no XO has ever been faced with the situation, how can you know that no XO would ever do the same? I know, discipline and such. But the belief that one would be extinguishing millions of lives and perhaps triggering the end of the world... I would hope that initiative still counts for something.

They do exercises all the time.

The philsosphy is that the President needs to know (really know) that the subs will launch when ordered to do so.

It's very unlikely that the crew would follow a mutiny even if an XO wanted to. And we really haven't had a mutiny in the USN in a long time...

It's been awhile since I've seen the movie but, wasn't thier comm system taken out before they could get final authorization for launch?

I seem to recall some military study that looked into land-based ICBMs and whether the crews would launch the missiles for real. The test found a large percentage would not. I think the test was set up so the guys thought they were launching for real.

Yes but... We're talking about the well reasoned conclusions of a respected officer vs the iron hand of a dictat... captain.

I do not doubt that most all officers would do as they were ordered to do. If they do not, the system breaks down.

However, I am also fairly sure that I've heard condemnations of 'I was just following orders'.

There are only 10 countries in the world with tech and know-how to build submarines.

They look like something Americans would fire from the torpedo tubes!
