Civ III v. CTP 2
Hey all,

I loved the game Civilization:Call To Power, and due to married with children life, got sidetracked from keeping up on the new games. Now that I'm ready to get back into it, at least as much as time permits, what do you think is the better game...

Civ III or CTP 2....

Also, are these ames related in some way or did they have a common start, or something? just curious.

Thanks

JD

You can get CtP2 for about £5, buy that and wait for Civ3 to drop in price, and Activision to release a MP/scenario editor expansion pack. Then run away from this thread as fast as possible before it becomes a flame war

The games are unrelated.

Postia ante flamia...

When (if?) you buy CtP2, don't forget to drop by the CtP2 forums here and read/ask about mods, they make the game worth its weight in gold...

I'd recommend Europa Universalis 2, but you might object to the eventual divorce.

EU2 gets old fast (but last a bit longer than EU1).

I wasted 35 Euro on EU2. I seem to be the only one who doesn't like it. Oh well, may be i'll like it later.

How about which do you prefer to play? and why?
Or should I just get civ II which is real cheap right now, 10 US dollars.

I told you. Alpha Centauri. It is, by far, superior to both Civ 3 & CTP 2. If, for some unholy reason, you are limiting yourself to the inferior games, go with Civ 3.

You can probably get CtP2 for $10 as well. And that is better than Civ2 certainly.

If time is limited with you and it sounds like it is then buy CTP2. With a few mods and the patch you're on your way to many hours of fun!!

With Civ3, unless you have massive amounts of time to invest learning the game, you will become frustrated very fast. You'll put the game away and curse yourself for spending money on a game that is just plain frustrating at times. It took me the longest time to finally get the hang of Civ3 and I'm a veteran civ1 and civ2 player.

Wait for Civ3 to drop in price and get CTP2 now. I think you'll end up happier.

On the one hand Civ3 I know were the worker tile improvement system will end: 200-300 workers in the late game, I think I have better things to do instead of wasting my time with moving 200 workers around the world each turn. On the other hand CTP2 you have PW instaed of workers this saves you a lot of time as you know from CTP1, for you as a CTP1 veteran I recommand CTP2 it has better graphics as Civ3 and you know more or less the game play, and of course it is cheap.

well, if you're looking for a strategy game that makes sense go for CTP2....but Civ 3 is fun too but I would wait if I were you until Gold Edition comes out with MP,Scenario editor and other stuff, don't be a sucker like rest of the world.
IMO CTP2 and Civ 3 are totally different games, you'll notice when you played them.

I'll bite.

The games are related in that two publishers squabbled over the rights to the sequel following Civ II. One got the rights to continue publishing Civilization x and the other had the right one time to make Civilization Call To Power and from then on it was just Call to Power x.

Both games are of a TBS nature and both attempt to mirror human history.

As for which game is better, I am not really impressed by either. Maybe Civ III with MP later this year will finally be the complete game that I wanted all along and be better. Until that time I suggest spending less money on Alpha Centauri, Civ II, CTPII, or a different genre of games all together.

CTP2 is much better, but dont play it right at the time you bought it. You will be dasapointed the same way i was the first time i played. Instead of that, you should donload the mods. Mods turns CTP2 the game the best so far.
If i were you i would by the CTP2 (after all you can find it as cheap as the price of a Big Mc), and i would download besides the official patch, the Apolyton Pack (I would say the the ultimate patch for it). That besides of adding graphics, fix unbalances, bugs and most of the AI problems (wich is the worse part of CTP2 out-of-the-box).

PS: The adding of a Mod do not overwrite the files of the original game besides what others games do. It just add more options to choose when executing the .exe.

This is like the 100th thread like this.

When do people understand, that you can't say definitely "That game is better than the other". That's a matter of your personal taste. Other advices are always biased, there's no absolute "better or worse". The only true answer is: Play both and decide yourself.

Here's my biased opinion: Even modded CtP2 is by far no match for Civ3. CtP2 an old game, that was released and abandoned by the publisher as an alpha version. It is silly in it's original form, you can beat "impossible" difficulty with eyes closed and hands tied. The various mods add a bit more color, some say they make a big difference, but I can't enjoy it anymore. I played it a while when it was new, now I can play it for a day and then put it back on the shelf. Does that mean CtP2 is a bad game? No, because it's only my opinion, others can and probably will disagree.

I'm playing Civ3 since it went out. It was released as a beta, but now after 3 patches it's close to be ready. It's challenging without any mods. It's not that moddable like CtP2, but I don't miss this feature, because I'm not a modder. It has no multiplayer yet (will be released soon as XP), but I don't miss this feature, because I don't use multiplayer. It has civilizations, that are really different, not only by color. It has really working borders, culture and strategic resources. And while I'm sure that Martin G. is a huge expert in Civ3-terms, I never moved 200-300 workers in the late game, that's plain nonsense. At this point the tile improvement is done long ago, I added most of the workers to the cities and the rest does the pollution cleaning automated, so I don't bother. Does that mean, that Civ3 is a good game? No, because it's only my opinion.

With other words: You can buy CtP2 for $10 and Civ3 for $50 and get in both cases your money's worth.

Well, I did get Civ III, it was on sale, $30 at Best Buy, and I no local store had CTP2...Thanks for all your opinions.

If only I could get the game to work now, it keeps shutting down right after the splash screen, oh well, on to tech support.

Make sure your cdrom drivers are up to date. In fact I'd check your video and sound card drivers as well. What operating system are you using?

BTW congrats on making your purchase. Be sure to peruse the Civ3 forums for advice and don't be afraid to ask for help when needed!

You might fail with Win95. I had also big problems with this OS, and couldn't get it running. Oh well, my Win95 installation was corrupted anyway, so I installed a Win98SE and it worked fine. Now I have it running at XPpro.
