pollution and total amount of forest
Does the the total amount of forest have an influence on pollution?

In the latter stages of the game I clear all city tiles of forest to make my cities grow. The result is less forest (as in real life).

Planting forest on non city tiles should therefore have an impact on the total ecological balance.

Does it really?

I assume you're talking about the global warming; as far as I know the only thing that affects this is the pollution output from a city's production. This is itself affected by factories, plants, recycling centres, etc..
