IW, the way you put it it's a matter of the actual course a governing party takes. As a joke, I said it was a matter of the party's 'colour', its official affiliation and all that...

Oh come on, Hueij, lighten up. I dislike CDA as well but the idea of having a wizard as PM is kinda funny in a way

It is, to those in this forum who think that leftists are, by definition, better people than Christian Democrats. That's not what I think, although I will probably never vote CD.

Melkert's and Rosenmöller's arrogance coming home to roost... A sight for sore eyes.

CDA is a union of three former Christian parties, one Roman Catholic, two Protestant.
In matters of economy they are a party of the centre, somewhere in the middle between the PvdA (Social Democrats) and the more conservative VVD, but with an important social paragraph, based on their Christian identity. Their left wing (mainly Protestants) have been known to be allies of the left, but there has always been a right wing which felt more attracted to the VVD, the main right-wing party.
Regarding euthanasia, abortion, gay rights, they are conservative, but never reactionary.
Explaining the CDA to Americans, I would say it can be situated somewhere in between the Democrats and the Republicans, but closer to the Democrats.

"Explaining the CDA to Americans, I would say it can be situated somewhere in between the Democrats and the Republicans, but closer to the Democrats."

An American shorthand is that they are "Reagan Democrats". By and large these are now Republicans and independents and make up 15-20% of the electorate.

So the CDA is slightly left of Germany's CDU?

The right gains more power in Europe.

Perhaps we shall start to see sounder economic policies as a result.

Because his (this) fellow countryman is one of those "loony lefties"...

Anyway, the Socialist Party (most left wing party out here) doubled their seats in parliament

"Christian Democrats? From what you describe that sounds like a real step backwards. If they try and take back your rights that you have fought for all this time, take to the streets!"

Isn't it funny how the far left always talks about how they believe in democracy and how they want to extend democracy to everything- but then when democracy gives them a result they don't like they can't accept it.

I was reffering to Provost Harrison. He is far left, and he didn't like the results of the election, and so he advocates taking to the streets.

A democratic 'win' doesn't necessarily give a party the automatic right to rescind the rights and freedoms of its citizens. One of the basic tenets of a liberal democracy. If the government attempts it, the population are well within their rights to demonstrate against that government.

Their view seems to be that, seeing as the Left is always right by definition, all others must be wrong, and probably bad, or mad, etc. To describe this kind of people (broadly the Politically Correct), Fortuyn coined the epiteth "de linkse kerk", the Leftist Church.

I didn't vote Fortuyn, I didn't vote CDA, I didn't vote for a leftist party, the party I voted for lost 15 seats, and I feel fine, thank you. -

I think people are over reacting, the CDA is not that bad I think. social are they centre just like the previous government was. I also woulnd't fair the moral somewhat conservative stance because you can't rule the nation allone and I don't know another party who shares there moral conservative ideology.
