The research bonus is equal to the gold bonus whether a caravan is delivered to your city next door or half way around the world to an AI civ.

The answer is YES (same amount of beakers added in your research box as the amount of gold mentioned by the AI on delivery)

Seeks some madness to perpetrate ...

1200 -- gives three techs to Mongols so as to reduce our beaker price and then extorts 75g; Vikings 25g ...
1220 -- Chemistry choose Communism (I'm being shanghaied here by all the other old farts who prefer Commie over Fundy - but the tech path has been chosen - it really would be madness to change track now) Research at 4 turns - time to find my Oedo table ... 1260 or 1340 don't think I can manage 1260 let's look ...
Beakers required for advance = 1184 with heroic measures 4 size 5 cities Xinning and an Ein in SH (more stops celbration) I can get 538 beakers - 1076 in two turns - 184 short can I get that much trade income? Not in one turn - DAMN! OK revolt set for 1340 - turn down science and lets crank out some money and good guys;

Note to SG(2) had you cranked up your science last turn we could have saved SH's research to contribute to commie and gained 4 turns. Yeah like any of us are that anally retentive - but it would have been nice

1240 -- 975 beakers needed;
1260 -- 768 beakers needed; TightPassage, Silver, 64g; SuezsurScouse, Coal, 60g; Mercatia, Silver, 40g; 604 beakers now; Mongols 50g; Celts 200g;
1280 -- 561 needed; RazeMeIfUDare, Oil, 34g; 527 needed
1300 -- 313 needed; Aleppo, Hides, 38g; SilkyFish, Silk, 21g; Sarzana, Coal, 44g; StrayBow, Coal, 47g; Porte yerMa, Silk, 18g; Kabul, Silver, 87g; Kashgar, Hides, 36g; 22 needed; Science to zero
1320 -- 22 needed; Food to SH; no other deliveries this turn;
1340 -- Communism select Explosives; Communism established; SH now 18; StickyMouse, Beads, 86g; Sad king Julius, Coal, 58g; Utica, Silk, 16g; Panama Hatt, Food;
1360 -- SH now 19; Silk, PaxSTYOMnia, 13g; Hides, Two Specials, 20g; Dye, Darwin's Canal, 23g; Dye, SuezsurScouse, 19g; War with Spain; 50g from Mongols;
1380 -- Explosives choose Economics; Leo's does the Engineer thing; Vet Clads start the softening up of Madrid prior to a large scale invasion - fun for one of our successors
1400 -- Food from Mercatia; Coal, Persepolis, 72g; Silk, RazeMeIfUDare, 28g;

Sorry - took my eye off the ball and lost celebration in SH for a turn - Economics will now arrive in 1440 - SH (now size 20) is beginning to stockpile food caravans for Wonder building. Once a city has three routes with SH it is time to think longer term and consider building laundrettes of one description or another - once you have three decent routes a Marketplace will normally be sufficient for celebration - don't forget to build a StockExchange in SH - this is just getting to the exciting bit - Oh and conquer Spain before lunch

It is worth considering taking fewer than 10 turns now - just do as many as you feel happy with - good luck and keep up the madness (what did I do that was mad? I'm an ICSer and I didn't found a single city - now that is mad!)

How do you know this? I know, must be charts for beaker requirements per tech #. But you can't be counting the beakers you already have on the screen... are you? What's the trick?

F5 gives you total taxes and beakers generated… you may now exclaim "D'oh!" and slap yourself on the forehead.

To find the number of beakers required for any tech - first clear any eins - then set science to 0% and read off the number of turns as total number of beakers required for science.

After 100 years 're-education' in RazeMeIfUDare a much chastened SG returns to the PolitBuro to apologise for serving the People so badly during his reign. Of course he should have inspected his Oedo table before selecting Communism and elected to research Economics (Explosives was not offered) and then both Economics and Communism could have been discovered in the same 120 year (6 turn) window. Of course he should have furthered the People's Just War against the Evil Spanish more fervently. Of course he should have founded at least another dozen cities and followed the StrayBow Master Plan to join all possible water ways into a single Scouse Entity (especially including the mountain top city ). Of course all cities of the Scouse People's Oligarchic Democracy should have been joined by railroad and all trade bonusses suitable enhanced.

For these and other gross failures the SG was banished for 500 years ...

Good luck, Mercatia, may SPOD prosper under your tutelage

We aren't playing bloodlust, but we should try to. We may not be able to conquer all, but that doesn't mean we have to give up on Earth (or whatever our planet is called). If nothing else, we can save it as a scenario and restart the turn counter.

SG[1], it's not so bad. Your exile will only be a little over 400 years.

Mercatia comes to power after her bumbling predecessor (just kidding SG1 ).

1420
Silkyfish build caravan and continues to train camels.
Sarzana builds caravan and starts working on a library.
Mercatia completes a harbor and starts working on an ironclad.

Trading with the vikings has been very lucrative as we netted nearly 500g.

1440
We discover Economics and immediatly start researching metallurgy. (Mercatia wonders why we are at war with the owners of the Great Wall And decides that making it obsolete is worth it.)

1460-1480...lots of caravans built and unit shuffling.

1500 We discover Metallurgy and put the scrollheads to work on Democracy.
Demanded 25g from Emp Ham that old jerk!
Only 75g from our so called friends the celts. That after giving them Railroad and Republic. GRRRR!!!

1510....more unit shuffling oh and panamahatt is in danger of barbaran take over. OOPS!

1520 Barbarians were held off for this turn near PanamaHatt.

1530 The two-faced Vikings just attacked without warning. Lost caravan.
Celts are still at war with the Vikings and Spanish so we were able to extort 75g from them.
Start building Adam Smiths in SH.
Discovered Democracy now researching conscription.

1540 Scouts report PanamaHatt was leveled by Barbarians. Sniff Sniff!
SH completed Adam Smiths and begins building cannon.

1560We learned conscription and start researching espionage.
Then Mercatia apologizes for over playing her turn and saves and hands over reigns to her successor.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't go Demo - we don't have the infrastructure - just about every city will go pear shaped and we will be plunged into Anarchy...
A celebrating Communist regime can turn out every bit as much science and gold as a Democracy with a great deal more security.

Mercatia, looks like a good game - I suspect that you do know what you're doing, though perhaps the unhappiness of Deity is new to you.
You have chosen to build Libraries, my choice of laundrette would have been Marketplace first - if this leads to celebration the gain in Science is almost the same as getting a Library and it increases the cash flow as well, but if we miss celebration the Science gain is not as good as Library - so it is a fair judgement call.
Pity you lost PanamaHatt - it will need rebuilding or the Grand StrayBowian Experiment will fail - but these things happen.
As a learning experiment - go back to your auto2.sav and revolt to Demo - and watch the world fall apart - it will not be a pretty sight.
Glad you are still enjoying the game - that's why we all play it ...

Comrade Mercatia's request for Democracy is interesting but I believe she should undergo some political retraining at the Sticky Mouse Institute to make her see the error of her thinking.

The advantages of Democracy are:
1) Corruption free government - we have it.
2) No increased unhappiness caused by many cities - we have it.
3) An extra trade icon for every square yielding trade - we have this in cities, which are celebrating.
4) Increased growth in population when cities celebrate (providing there is a food surplus/aqueducts/sewers) - we don't have this but we have grown our capital to a suitable size to benefit from the wonders there.
5) Units/cities immune to bribery - this hardly applies playing against the AI.

The disadvantages of Democracy are:
1) Every offensive unit outside a city or city fort within three tiles of the city causes a double unhappy face. We have plenty of these. Remember this also applies to all ships unless they are Galleons or Transports.
2) A city in revolt for two turns brings down the government.
3) Every unit (excluding caravans/diplomats) cost one shield support.

In our game the centre of the empire is basically an ICS approach around the Straybow Canal - so the benefits from expansion are limited. Food is not plentiful in many towns and any surplus would disappear after even modest growth. The fact that shield support comes into the reckoning means that food production becomes compromised by the need to keep up production.

This game is perfect for celebrating Communism. (Victory by spaceship should be easy after a little tweaking ) The libraries started in some cities should become MarketPlaces to facilitate celebration. In the early stages of the game a library makes a big difference to research progress - but in the mid Sixteenth Century AD a library in a city producing 8 beakers only makes the total 12 - we currently need over 1400 beakers for the next discovery! The way ahead is caravans - and a hint to my Swiss comrade freight - hum Corporation!

After we have finished this game we could try another succession this time using Republican/Democratic governments. Provided everyone agrees to stick to the objectives the game play from 4000BC is different in many respects.
