I have to agree with DF on issues relating to the draft. If the cause isn't great enough for us to have willing volunteers, it's a war we shouldn't be fighting.

Smaller countries in close proximity to threats do not have any margin for error, like the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
It reminds me of a somewhat famous quote. Somthing like, if you want peace, prepare for war.

You've been a real gas lately, sweetie. It's amazing how little of the education being served to you is actually finding its way between your ears...

I can't wait to use "The only difference between the English, French and Germans etc is language" in his next EU troll.

Well this is it, and why I am strongly in favour of a multicultural society. Look at the new things new people bring to the country, in terms on insight and culture. I think this country has become a better place, for the better. I'd hate to see Stew and his 'Le Pen-esque' ideology get control and make this place well and truly bland. Sometimes I am sure the 'ethnic' side of this nation is the only thing that makes it remotely worth bothering with.
And Stew, I was talking to your big brother earlier on today. Be afraid, be very afraid

Well I'm sure he'd have been against some of your family entering the country in the past if it was based on his current criteria, some friend!
Then again he probably just doesn't think about how what he says might affect real people.

He likes to do this for the shock value anyway, I think he is fed up of being 'boring' and wants to be more shocking. He fools no one. I'd rather be 'dull' than be held in contempt. Besides, if he actually exhibited his personality properly, he isn't dull...just psychotic

I hope so, I'd rather he was just annoying rather than really as predjudiced as he pretends. It's quite sickening really.

Come on and just answer/debate the freaking question...
Is conscription or the apprehension thereof a legitimate grounds for emmigrating and seeking refuge abroad? Should the same be a reason for a host country to grant refuge?

It depends on the circumstances.
I wouldn't support allowing people from Sweden to claim refugee status based on the fact that they had to spend a year birdwatching at a military base. I would support the refugee status of the guy Boddies described.

Yes we have a mandatory military service, and i'm god damn proud of it. Of course if you don't want to kill, you can choose a service without a gun, or even civilian service (i don't know what it's called) where you seek a job and contribute to society in that way. If not, then jail you go.
My opinion is if you have mandatory service in your country, you have to do it. I personally don't care if you do it with your gun or not, just get your ass in the grass like the rest of us do. If in war, then i can't find any excuse that would be good to leave the country. Thank you goodbye, don't bother coming back.
On the other hand, if a person is totally against it ideologically and couldn't do it in any circumtances but contributes to the country in other way, then i will respect his/hers choice (like helping the eldery etc). But this applies just some countries in the world.
I wouldn't say it's illegal to seek refuge abroad but very wrong in moral ways if home is being invaded by enemy.
I guess what i saying is that if you don't want to defend your home, then you don't deserve it. If you can't die for any reason or cause in the world, then you don't deserve to live.

We don't know whether the shop owner was a refugee or an immigrant. I'd bet that he is an immigrant given that he had enough money to set up his own shop.
As far as immigration goes, the question is usually what they can provide to a country rather than why they are leaving their country.
If the guy was a refugee, I think his status is valid. If he was drafted into the Turkish military he would likely have been forced to kill his own people.
If he lied, who gives a sh!t. He's got his own business. He's paying taxes and he probably employs other people who pay taxes and make other contributions to society.

You really don't know?
It's basically meat. Usually in kebab restaurants it is actually döner kebab (which means "revolving meat"), because the meat is in a skewer, revolving constantly, slowly. The döner kebab here in Finland is usually a mixture of lamb, cow and pig...
