Building Darwins in Sodaq in 3 turns
With building Darwins we get 2 free tech (and a nice wonder for the list :

If we change production in Nalduria to a caravan we can build it in Sodaq in 3 turns, giving us Tactics, Industrialisation and a lot of bulbs on the way to our next tech.

The amount of gold involved would the the cost to buy 34 shields, not a lot of money for our prospering civ

Edit: It seems I forgot to check the poll option

Please post your thoughts on this below.

Sodaq is building a clad now that will be finished next turn.

We need the 2 turns to take the caravans over anyway.

I mentioned this is another thread about a week ago, but it didn't get any response, so this is good. I have always tended to build Darwin's in the past, but I am wondering (no pun intended) if it is really worth the Caravans when there are other things to use them for soon.

Yes, we get 2 techs immediately, and whatever beakers we have carry over to the next tech. We will want to have Caravans accumulated for the next Wonders (Isaac's, Hoover's, Bach's, Sufferage, UN, etc). Or we can use a few Caravans for trade with Babylon and speed through our research. Or we can just research the techs (we are getting them every 4 or 5 turns).

We have just taken the GL. That should gain us some overlooked techs that the other civs discover (that we passed by). If we build Darwin's, the game is going to force us to choose among some techs we don't care about. The last time we completed a tech, the alternatives were Fundamentalism, Sanitation, Theology, and Theory of Gravity. Those will be the ones we will have to choose among if we get Darwin's (of course, it will give us the one we are researching, Tactics, and that is good).

So, I am torn between the options here. It seems the other Civs are nowhere near getting Railroad, so Darwin's is safe for some time. We don't have to decide to build it right now.

I guess the way to look at it is what techs that would be offerred do we want and which Wonders we want to focus on next.

1. If we build Darwin's now (and use up our Caravans), we will get Tactics at once, and probably would want Theory of Gravity for Isaac's. And then, what will we research (Theology?). We're not going to be offerred Industrialization soon (we have too many passed techs).

2. If we use up our Caravans, we will have to build more at once. That will take away from our ability to build the Riflemen, Dragoons, Diplomats, and Caravels we need to eliminate the Indians and carry on the attack to the Babylonians. Many of our newly-conquered cities require basic infrastructure to become useful in our war-efforts, so they can't contribute to the production of Military units for the next session.

So, do we want Military units, or do we want Isaac's and Tactics 3 turns earlier?

I can't decide. I want the Citizens to do so. "Power to the People"!

I want to add, though, that this is exactly the kind of question that the City-Planner should raise (even if he didn't get the polling option set up).

It al depends on how fast we want to kill off the remaining civ's.

Building Darwins will give us instant Cavalery, plus it gives us the chance to start building vet cav right away, saving us engineers to railroad the Indian and Babylonian teritory.

Checking the goal option on sience advisor we should be able to go for industrialisation next

The caravans are on our first island, far away from potential trading partners
Shipping them over will mean we either have to build more caravals (who dont upgrade to transports becouse we dont have/want magnetism)
OR
Use the ships we have now (we can ship less units to our front lines)

If we dont build Darwins it will take us a long time to get to Hoovers anyway, as we are planning a world takeover asap the other wonders on that list aren't that urgent.

I would suggest building it

Oh and Cavebear, thanks

A fine solution for every situation...

Why not? If those caravans are commodities that can earn us a heap of gold and beakers, deliver them and forego Darwin's. We're close to cavalry anyway, iirc.

I saw this post on 10-06-2002 (link 1764 Science) and I wrote a post reply on that link topics, agreeing with Darwin's.
About the Alexandria Great Library, we had no benefit from it and it'll be soon obsolete : considering science advance of the carthagenians, there'll be no tech discovered by two other civs after Indian's destruction, even if Babs have a good science level.
Always ahead in science, with Darwin's !

If you do build Darwin remember the following:
- This wonder only gives you the science being researched and one extra free.
- Make sure that you have just started a new tech when you build it…if F6 is nearly full you effectively only receive ONE free advance.
- Build it in a city founded recently. After you receive the two advances all the other cities in your empire will contribute beakers to the next research goal after Darwin.

Yes, if we do build it, hold off on finishing it until we start on Industrialization, and then go with Communism as the free tech (currently winning science poll). I should probably set up another long-term science poll, then.

Ok, now lets clarify something, when you build Darwin's, do the beakers you have built up carry over to the next yech you actully have to research, porque I have heard both yes and no on this thread...

Good point Git #2

We just started on Tactics, 4 turns away, we can postpone it till then, or we can go all taxes for 3 turns earning 300+ gold a turn to bribe Indian city's.

With our presidents recent discovery this doesnt sound too bad actualy

Looking at the rate and course we are going now:

Womans suffrage: dont need it becouse we are in commie

Newtons: Better deliver the 8 caravans, it will bring us more sience and money

Hoover: We will need the corperation and electricity for that, upgrading all our clads to destroyers

UN: We arent planning on making peace with someone are we

I'll go eat my Banana now
