Sixchan, your profile says that you are English, so why are you upset about 66?

BTW, we were even better in 70. But no-one kicked Brazil off the pitch for us, that time.

It says my last name is English.

I was born and raised in Glasgow.

Yes, you see that was a joke.

Obviously being born and raised in Glasgow might have impaired your sense of humour, though. You probably like Rab C Nesbitt.

Well, guys, despite some lapses such as your treatment of the Irish (I am party of Irish descent), I think you have a lot to be proud of. You should take pride in America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Our culture and our laws are basically English.

India and Pakistan have large strains of Englihs culture in their systems.

You have done well by humanity.

If I were England, I too would be very leary of joining a EU dominated by France and Germany. You should, instead, seek closer relations with your offspring, including the United States. I think some of the gloom has to be caused by the EU situation.

Well there's an unqualified statement if ever I saw one. britain can't just up moorings and sail across the Atlantic. I say get friendly with your neighbours first, then start thinking about outreach further.

That was a joke? Can you think of another reason I might not have known?

Personally, my tastes in comedy lean towards American Sitcoms and Stand-Up Comedy.

Also a very exciting time culturally - what with the Beatles in their prime and winning the world cup, it must have seemed like we still ruled the world even without an empire.

sigh.....

Yeah, but Clear Skies. If the UK is sucked into the EU, we may have lost you forever to the dark side.

What is this misconception that the left ignores/promotes crime elements in society?

Left wingers like to live in safe neighborhoods just as much as right wingers do…

And moreover we like to see solutions to crime that actually work, such as greater equality.

Actually, is crime a left-right issue in the UK? I get the import of monolith94's post that it is not.

Not really, the Tories winge about crime but they'd winge about there being too many policemen if Labour brought in more.

The right just seem to complain about anything Labour do.

Quick! We must all vote Lib Dem!

I'd prefer to vote Lib Dem than Tory.

There's no decent British right-wing party.

The Tories need to become more right-liberal (classical liberal) than right-authoritarian if they hope to regain votes.

The Liberal Democrats have one excellent policy on crime, and that is the legalisation of cannabis. It's unfortunate that many Conservative members do not see this...

Let's face it, Iain Duncan Smith has done SO little to improve the fortunes of the Tories. Britain was once described as 'a Conservative country which occasionally votes Labour' - that has been completely turned around. The Tories are really, really struggling - the media are being a far more potent opposition to the Government than they themselves are. Portillo or Clarke would have been thousands of times better than IDS - even Widdecombe would have done more for them.

It will happen, even the Tories aren't stupid enough to carry on like this after the next election.

But even if they do become pro-gay rights, I still won't vote for them. I'm a lefty, after all

Of course, Clear Skies, Britain was a "Conservative country that occasionally votes Labour" back when Labour was a socialist party which, although it has socialist members, it is no longer.

I didn't hold out much hope for IDS. Unfortunately, he was always going to win the leadership contest; Clarke would've caused the party to fall apart over Europe, and whilst I agree with much of what Portillo and his supporters believe and say, there was always the lingering suspicion that he wasn't the right person for the job, even if he had the right policies.

IDS has been better than I expected. Perhaps he can be the "Kinnock" of the Conservative Party, dragging the right of the party back towards the centre. I can't see him ever becoming Prime Minister though - unless Labour monumentally **** up.

Then surely that would mean gay people should recieve 100% the same rights as straight people? Legalising gay marraige, abolishing section 28, etc.

Marriage is an institution for enabling a stable family home for couples wanting to bring children into this world. Marriage is for man and woman.

Gays should not raise children.
