Playing Warcraft III Online
Just so people know, there's an alternative to battle.net.

If you download the latest version of Kali (download.com has it), then get the free registration for Kali from their website at www.kali.net, you can add Warcraft III as a game. It tricks it into thinking you're playing a LAN game even though it's over the network.

After you've got Kali set up, do the following:

  • go to file , settings
  • click the "advanced" tab
  • change the "tracker" ip to 64.55.196.2
  • then go to the GameBrowser tab
  • and set "Internet Game Master" to 64.55.196.2
  • close and restart kali

  • now in the left hand column right click on "game resources" and go to "add custom game"
  • name the game "Warcraft 3" exactly
  • point the program field to the war3.exe wherever you installed the game
  • close and restart kali

  • expand the "game lobbies" folder on the left hand side. Warcraft 3 is now in there and any kali servers running the game should be visible
  • after the game is launched, MAKE SURE!!! you choose LAN game, and the host of the game should choose to create a game which the other players can join (it will take some time)

Yes, but it's boring as hell no matter where you play.

Not to rain on your parade Asher but may I ask why if you are a legal purchaser of WarCraft III you would want to do this. I mean if you legally own the game then why not use the dedicated servers that Blizzard has set up?

Of course, if you have not legally purchased the game then I see a reason...

    Have you ever used battle.net?
It's far laggier than a direct connection.

I never played Diablo II on battle.net either, and I legally own the game.

Yeah, battle.net is a good service and I respect Blizzard for setting up free servers for all their players - not every company would have done that - but it does suffer from very bad lag,. During peak times it is almost always unplayable on my 56k and my mate with a broadband connection suffers quite a bit too.

battle.net is good?! I always thought it was terrible. Having been used to bungie.net's easy as pie way to find good games and players, it's far more annoying on battle.net... the worst thing by far is that after the game is over, everybody immediately breaks up. Plus, if your team is defeated (or yourself without teams), you just get kicked out of the game. This makes it hard to set up games based on a group of fun players, not off a certain map. I mean, you can't even change the map or settings once you've started a Blizzard game, which is utterly ridiculous, and assumes that people joined my game to play a map, not to play with me.

So you have to do all that by hand. I say, just play War3 in the CS lab on a nice and fast LAN with people who are actually fun to play with.

Anyway, it may be worth a try. Are the people on Kali less lame than people on b.net?

I have no idea, all my Kali games are password protected and with friends online.

Blizzard conveniently left out TCP/IP direct connect in their options, so we're using Kali to trick Warcraft into thinking we're running on a LAN.

bnet would be good if Blizzard cut out the free crap and charged a few bucks for the online service. The benefits are two-fold:

    a) More money for better service/more games
    b) Gets rid of the riffraff that lags it up in the first place.

It's where the elite players (Agent 911, TillerMaN, Zileas, etc.) go to play the game. I prefer Battle.net though because I've heard that Kali players are quite snobish toward newbies.

Zileas hasn't been "elite" since 1.04 when he abused that reaver/shuttle combo.

I prefer to call it a cunning strategy. Blizzard killed that when BW came out anyway.
