I'm still out STYOM. Although I now have MGE I'd rather stay out as I'm not familiar with this game and re-joining would put me in 3 succession games--small potatoes to you and the others here, I know, but remember that I'm a Civ-impaired newbie

Stop impugning your Civ abilities... you're reminding me of me when I joined Apolyton

OK, since I've already played several turns in the Sticky game, I'll finish that one tonight and start this one tomorrow.

Mmmm... we're in fundy now. EXXXXXcellent.

STYOM is proclaimed Marzipan Wizard of the Zealots in 1380... Zounds! The infidels have a 3 tech lead on us! The dogs! This must be resolved... by hook or by... well, by Crooks

Goals:
-Resolve tech issue
-Acquire Magellan from Greeks
-pump up cities for trading
-begin to trade in earnest with Babs & Chinese
-crush all others

1380: Taxes adjusted to 3.3.4 to make Stonehenge celebrate.
Bridge Building, Feudalism and Chivalry acquired from Russians for Engineering, Writing and Seafaring. Maps exchanged.

1400: Viking Crusaders bribed to switch sides near Jarrow for 266 g. Mmm, irony.
Production in some cities switched to Crusaders.

1420: Gems>Stonehenge 55g, Beads>Stonehenge 45g
Peace with Babylonians. Trade Democracy for Gunpowder (200 g from sold Barracks)

1440: Leadership>Physics. Roskilde(Viking) bribed for 339 g and 39 plundered; the city also comes with a Settler. Vikings demand 150 g for peace... thus, we have war

1460: South Watch founded.

Barbarians plunder Asyut of Egypt

1480: Beads>Stonehenge 33g

Spartan Musketeer valiantly defeats three shipborne Barb Crusaders!

1500: 100 g from hut. Stock Exchange rushed in Stonehenge. Science rate adjusted to 5.4.1 (remembering too late the science effects of Fundy )

Greeks land near Temptation Isle - we agree to peace. For now

1510: Babylonians start Isaac Newton.

1520: Silver Men-an-Tol>Akkad 205g

1530: Tribute demanded from Greeks >War Lindholm(Greek) bribed for 392 g, and we gain Magellan and 92 g. Silk>St Petersburg 210g, Spice>St Petersburg 44g. Wool>Akkad 52g

1540: Viking assult bloodily repulsed at Roskilde. Adam Smith rushed.

1550: Adam Smith's Trading Co. in Glastonbury. Spice Athens>Stonehenge 207g Beads>Smolensk 56g, Salt>Smolensk 136g.

Next on the acquisition list: The Pyramids of Trondheim

1560: Physics>Theology (best of a bad lot)
Spice>Stonehenge 68g, Copper(d)>Stonehenge 72 g

Marzipan Wizard STYOM resigns the priesthood to tour with the Jim Rose Circus.
****************************

We can probably steal a tech (Theory of Grav) from the Babylonians - but they are also researching Theology and I was waiting to steal that if they researched it before us. ToG just slows us down; our science rate is low enough as it is.

Lots of trading going on, and our Dragoons are running wild in Greek territory Although, we have so much money, bribing would probably be easier, if less fun I leave it to my successor to spend the cash in our bloated treasury

We are well ahead, and not willing to conquer the world.
Therefore our one and only priority is research (mostly through caravans with a big delivery bonus). Therefore we choose a nice fat foreign city, namely Smolensk (size 12, the fattest foreign city we know of, and quite far away from Stonehenge) and send all our caravans there.
1570: Coal to Akkad = 260g
1580: Hut = 100g
1590: Russians steal a tech, but we don't declare war, since we are willing to trade with Smolensk.
1600: Silk to Smolensk = 330g; Pearls to Smolensk = 354g.
1610: Theology discovered, Metallurgy researched
Silk (thrice) to Smolensk = 186 + 189 +182g
Gold to Smolensk = 152g
Pearls (twice) to Smolensk = 132 + 156g.
We bribe Skara for 344g (51g in plunder)
1620: Mighty Zealot dragoons take Cyborg (plunder = 41g); Hut = Cremona (AT).
1630: Metallurgy discovered, Chemistry researched.
1640: Russian caravel sneak attacks close to Smolensk = 4 units lost; WE SHALL REMEMBER , but we reorganize our trade towards Stonehenge (now size 20); research must go on!
1650: Russian caravel sunk ; mighty zealot dragoons take Jorvik (plunder = 54g)
1660: Zealot caravel sunk, Russian caravel sunk ; Salt to Stonehenge = 60g; JSB to be completed next turn in Stonehenge.

Well, that course seemed the best and most logical one for a man of the cloth...

Besides, after 180 years of chanting, hanging bricks from one's naughty bits might be a nice change

I'm back and see a next to my name.

Can't d/l until tonight around 8pm CST (13 hr from this writing). Still fearful that my software issues could be a problem, but see that the La Fayette save is a zip, so there is hope. Can wait if necessary.

Gits, please post/confirm whether it's me or Vlad.

Excellent choice of deployment for that trireme!

Great use of the whale, too...

Not to mention the road going to the fortress but not between cities.

Watch out for these guys -- They look like a major threat!!

1660: Vlad Antlerkov appointed Midpriest. Seeing that we're at 1660 and still in the bloody Medieval age, he decides to go after Industrialization ASAP.

1670: City renaming. Glastonbury becomes East Lutefisk. Caravans get shuffled around. Caravel encounters Chinese ironclad!

1680: Babylonians have ironclads, also! Chinese and Russians sign secret alliance against us, and China attacks us. We lose that caravel. Talks with the Russkies, Greeks, and Egyptians prove beneficial; we get peace treaties with all three, at no cost (techs, GP, or otherwise).

1690: Chemistry discovered. Many Zealots like studying how things blow up, so we're researching that.

1700: Chinese discover Magnetism, cancelling Lighthouse. The bastards. On the plus side, we get Magnetism, cancelling out those effects (since we all got upgraded), and we also get Steam Engine, as part of a peace deal with China. We gave them Astronomy and The Wheel. Everyone, laugh at China now.

1710: More caravan shuffling.

1720: Explosives discovered! Booyaka! Now doing Railroad. Discovered some roads near Cyborg.

1730: More caravan shuffling.

1740: Russkies discover Railroad.

1750: Railroad stolen. And Theory of Gravity.

1752 (!): Barbs sink Russian caravel. Now researching Industrialization.

Industrialization should be done within a turn or three.

And guess what? As of 1752, that trireme was still there. In fact, I loaded up a much earlier save (40 AD) and looked at the map in cheat mode. Still there.

That trireme crew must be bored by now.

Brothers,
If the trireme never moves, it is not a brilliant Russian idea.
But I wish to stress that Kiev is a canal city: if the Russians managed to have an ironclad sailing on the 'lake' instead of a trireme, this would be very dangerous for any ship sailing offshore Kiev (impossible to attack the clad from the sea, and the clad can attack you anytime).

I've seen similar trireme-in-lake deployments before. They never seem to change

BTW, nice "shuffling" of those camels, Vlad

That's right. I have never seen the AI attacking from one of those 'laguna harbours'...but I have met (twice IIRC) a battleship sailing on such a lake close to a city, and that made the city really difficult to take before howitzers .

Left Priest Sodaqqaji ascends to command of the holy people under Marzipan Wizard Jezebel. He calls in the commander of the merchant fleet and slaps him about. Empty transports sailing willy-nilly all over the ocean! There are camels waiting to take our holy products to the infidel! Sodaqqaji looks over the Marzipan Wizard's realm and is pleased. So we're not the most well-read folk on the planet, the gods on high abhor the teachings of sacreligeous nonsense to the common folk, who might not be so discerning about right and wrong. We work hard, trade aggressively, and our womenfolk are fertile! Clearly signs of blessing.

During his leadership, the Left Priest hears news of the Russians formulating some idiocy about our origins. Such a text should be written by our wise men, not heathens! Quickly, a bright monk named Darwin is ordered to write a treatise that would usurp the Russian tomfoolery. With eight camels at his disposal, Darwin completes his theory. The international press rejoices at our brilliance, and the Russians are left buying copies of our books. The brainstorming session led by Darwin also nets us some good ideas - We now conscript our young men into the military. Also, some dim bulb was illuminated by the good intent of our mighty creator, and came up with a way to vastly increase our production. Later, our traders come up with the brilliant idea of incorporating our vast gold production. Camels are retired to wherever camels retire, and freight trucks roll forth from the guilds! Wise men are now trying to find a way to harness electricity. With divine inspiration, we will use it to bring us closer to the stars.

Alas, the Russians do not take worldwide public humiliation lightly. Soon thereafter, they sneak attack our innocent merchants! The evil Babylonian scourge joins them in their vain attempts to intimidate our mighty realm. Ironclads are dispatched to punish the treacherous louts. Our northern army sacks Ravning Enge, putting many citizens to the wall. A laughable Viking invasion near Vikings SUCK! ends with little more than some good high protein feed for our dogs.

Some weak willed faithful cease their celebration of Jezebel's glory. They are easily plied back into the fold with some material comforts. The Left Priest then reduces luxuries while they celebrate, and nobody takes note. In thanks, they improve our holy mother's throne room with some fine marble pillars.

Left Priest Sodaqqaji steps down from his leadership and returns to perform his secretive duties on Inquisitor Isle.
