New PTW screenshots
There are new screenshots at Gamespot, showing concept art of dinos, a gameplay shot, and a new scenario menu.

i find it appauling that they wasted a screenshot on a dinosaur.

and that mountain / ruins pic does nothing but prove the ottomans are in, and shows what appears to be a regicide style king.

the scenario loader is decent i suppose. shoulda came with regular civ3 though...

Dinosaur, whatever.

Top right: That looks way nasty, and why are there destroyed cities (I think) in 4000 BC?

Bottom right: Cool, but let's watch the spelling.

I'm doubting the Arabs are in at all now. The Ottomans seem to have the Arab influence. Hope I am mistaken. Even their leader head that we have previously seen could represent the ottomans.

This screenshot also seems to indicate that that the leader of the Ottomans may be Osman. Firaxis did mention something about King units didn't they? If Osman is the leader of the Ottomans, what do you guys think? He is the founder of the Ottoman Empire, but I think that I might prefer Suleyman.

Yeah, we still don't know what the civs are, but Ottomans are, IMO, a clue that no Arabs are included.

Nice shots. Has anyone an idea what the new icons mean (above the infobox that shows the sultan)? I know they were also on the first PTW screens, but has Firaxis revealed their function?

I hope the dinosaur belong to another game that get posted here by mistake. I wonder if they'll include liches and butterflies (ADM 0-0-0, but wouldn't be cool?), maybe in a WWII scenario

Firaxis has said that they may include dinosaur units in PTW. I'm sure that they aren't in the standard game, just for mods. They probably recycled some artwork from Sid's abortive dinosaur game (all Firaxis games use the same artwork formats .pcx and .flc).

i just hope they get game-play-issues first. i don't like reading, that diplomacy settings for scenarios and events are (only) on the wishlist, but dinosaur sprites and 3D-meshes have been created already... somehow imnsho they havn't got priorities right

but then, otoh, you've got to give the artists some work too

The spelling on the scenario example is certainly disturbing, but so is the minimap. There are a lot of scenarios where knowledge of the map layout is a major spoiler.

oh god, its true, they didn't listen to us on the Dino issue! Its all over, total waste of programming time on units that will be modded out of the game!

Those dino units were probably done, before we ever knew about PtW.

You know, the art from that canceled Sid's project.

Hazie, I would bet that there is absolutely no programming included on the dinosaurs. I imagine that all that they did was gave the artwork (and that was probably laying around from Sid's Dinosaurs). There will probably be modding needed if you want them, not the other way around.

DaveV, I agree with you about map spoilers. I'd hate to spend a lot of time on a scenario that depended on exploration and have the player see the lay of the land on the scenario selection screen.

You guys just don't get it, this is obviously a sly play on words by Firaxis. The kings must fight a duel with one another while you must also survive the dual threat of barbarians and an enemy civ.

What about the resources in the ruins? Is it gems? Will ruins produce some kind of luxury? Maybe each civilizations ruins produce some kind of artifacts? Maybe tourism in modern ages? Or did they just place gems in ruins for the hell of it? Any thoughts on that?

I think I'll throw my hat in with the Dinosaur bashers. Why, oh why, will they be in the game? Modding needed or no, it's still absolutely silly to include them. Wasting my hard drive space like that, ugh. Maybe someone can create a new civ... the Bedrockians. The great leaders can be Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble, and Joe Rockhead. The king can be Mr. Slate.

I also think it's a bad idea to show a minimap when selecting a scenario. I mean once you've played it once, it wouldn't matter too much. But before that, the scenario may be made to deliver a surprise to the player. I'm specifically thinking of one somebody made and posted over at Civanatics where you have to find an oasis in the midst of a huge desert.

I wonder what ruins will add to the game. Will they be like a goody hut?

I don't know why you guys are upset about the dinosaurs. My guess is that they cost Firaxis next to nothing to put in because they were using art assets from another project (that didn't materialize).

I don't think anyone is upset about the time Firaxis put into the dinosaur, I think it's more that the dinosaur is something that will add nothing to the game. I mean, maybe they have plans of making some Godzilla scenario where you have to find the spawing places of the dinosaurs that are terrorizing Tokyo.

Also, things like editable diplomacy and events are on their "wish list" which means its only a possibility that they'll be in the expansion, but it looks like there will certainly be dinosaurs in the expansion.

I'm not sure about the 'barbarian stronghold' map, but 'an eye in the sea' and 'bulls eye' are user-made maps. They were created by godinex, an apolyton forum member whose native language is not English. So, no need to worry about the spelling.

I like the dinosaur, I'll make it available at Genetics & send a pack of them at my enemies. Finally I'll have a reason to reaserch Genetics!
