How many Viking empires do we need in the poll?

Anyway, I voted for the holy Banana Republic...

Poland-Lithuania. Was way ahead its times in liberalism and religious and national tolerance, free markets etc etc.

That's one of reasons that brought it down, though.

Ottoman Empire. That'd be a good way to take care of all the problems in the east.

None of the modern empires. All of the screwed up ills of the world can be traced back to that white man's burden and imperialist sh1t.

I second Ottoman Empire.

I remain unconvinced that self-determination is superior to imperialism.

Amen to that! Africa would be better off if it was still divided and governed by imperial powers. I think that the world would be a better place today if the developing countries were subordinate to some empire.

Anyway, I think that it would be interesting to see what the world would be like if the Napoleonic Empire were still intact.

Edited for spelling.

I have to agree. After the US became independent they get their civilians murdered every now and then by whoever wears a turban and swirls a butterknife. But you get what you ask for.

Maybe if U.S. citizens would grow a pair things like that wouldn't happen.

That also maybe true. Many places around the globe would be in just as bad of shape if they were left alone, if not in worse shape. I mean, Africa would probably be an even more of a tribal culture than it is now, and would be equally if not more wrought by violence and especially plague(due to lack of technology). What modern infrastructure (railroads, phonelines, etc) that many developing nations have were originally placed their by former occuping powers, and they are only rotting and decaying with few if any new inprovements since the foreigners have left. Now that I think about, many places probably benefited (FMPOV) under imperlialism. I mean, the philopeans would probably be like cambodia if it hadnt been for US presence their, instead they are more like the Indonesians.

Then on the other side of that coin, indo-china is in as bad as shape as its in due to foreign involvement by the French and the US, like Cambodia and Vietnam for example (though Vietnam is supposedly improving significantly). Then on the third face of that coin (err.. right...) you have places like Bolivia that havent seen a foreign power in like 150 years, but under their own power they continue to fail as a modern state. Imperialism ha helped some, hurt some, and had little effect on others. And it all depends on your definitin of 'help' too. Like mine was in terms of modernization and wealth, but at the expense of unique cultures, which in that case Imperialism is nothing but bad.

EDIT: But really, who cares about culture when your life expecatancy is 45 years? And you live in a hut much like your ancestors did 1000 years ago beyond the day and age that men have walked on the moon? Srew culture IMO if it means a better, more comfortable life.

You're missing the Third Reich. And the Napoleonic Empire. And the British Empire, but that's been said.

And 'Bananna' is supposed to be 'Banana'.

Besides, you just wait until we resume our Holy Crusade for North American Unity(tm). Sure, we took that break in 1815, but the day will come! Already we have eroded the decadent Canadian Culture!

Reading is Fundamental, Paiktis. The question is which empire would you like to see return, not which one is likely to. None of these empires are coming back any time soon.

My atlas says the Tokelau isles belong to New Zealand. Why do they have their own flag here at Polly?

Why didnt you know Tokelauians make up one of the largest ethnic groups of Apolyton? See I, and most others with American flags just have them because we envy their [edit: great and magnificant] country so much . We are really natives of Tokelau however.

Kman

EDIT: take that paiktis

pfeh. i still think imperialism, no matter where you put it, is one of the worst ideas ever. even if those nations would have ended up f*cked up without euro help, at least it would have been by themselves, and not by some evil foreign power.
