Krill, the first step is to setup a throwaway game, one that you don't intend to finish or win, and pump out an ultra early army. Play as Germany and crank out a few vet archers from the get go. Then go find a happy, peaceful civ minding its own business and wipe them off the face of the earth, after being a bastard and extorting tech from them for peace, then attacking the next turn. Once you get that rush from doing it one time, you can reload for a real game and should find it easier to go to war for real.

And he has to file taxes, and you're gonna audit the poor son of a ***** because he's not really good at math. You pull the IRS van up to his house and take everything. You take his velvet Elvis and his toothbrush and his penis pump and that all goes up for auction with the burden of proof on you because you forgot to carry the 1. All because you wanted to eat a fish, and you couldn't even cook the fish because you need a permit for an open flame."

vxma1 makes a GREAT point here: If you want to try camps, look to your less-than-ideal terrain for some of your early towns... no adjacent river, no high value tiles, etc. Make those your camps, and discipline yourself not to build many improvements in those towns. Later in the game, when research allows for higher production, those tiles will be more useful helping one of your cities / metros become a powerhouse. Also, every once in a while, it's OK to change your mind, and turn what was meant to be a camp into a keeper... I did this in AU 502, and it's amazing how quickly you can then get the basics built. I had a 6 pop camp with just a Temple and a Barracks, and, post-RR, built all of the next tier of improvements at a 3-4 turn rate each.

On a separate note: I have been really tied up since the beginning of the year, and thus haven't been around as much as I'd like. If anybody wants to nominate threads for inclusion here, or make any other suggestions, please let me know. The first thing I've done is add alexman's C3C corruption update, but I am certain that there are other changes that need to be made.

Maybe we should un-hijack this thread with a separate thread on camps. I've taken to naming them Fort Fillintheblank for reference...but I keep making the mistake of adding aqueducts in non-camps and letting them grow into unrest. I *wish wish wish* that the F1 screen used red to show cities about to get restless, as CTP2 did.

And there's quite a bit that's out of date, since it relates to Vanilla or PTW concepts that have since been altered.

I think this will fall within NM's plans to beef up the AU forum's presence.

Now that I am finally getting a bit into MP with the help of some of our PBEM stalwarts, I found a great piece by Friedrich-Psitalon, "Playing the Metagame: Overarching Civ Strategies", that I have now included.

Sheesh, forgot I had a "notify" set to this thread. Email from the past...

That article is one of my pride and joys, but it's by no means my only good one. Take a peek over at the Civ3 Players Ladder forums fora few of my others - I stopped posting MP-related articles here due to lukewarm response, amongst other issues. The forum is at - and I hope this isn't against board rules, but I figure we serve different communities - civ3players.proboards2.com . Check under "Strategy" and you'll see a lot. Mine aren't the only good ones there, but I'll admit I have bias.

In all honesty, I give due credit to where I am now in the MP community to my days surfing here; I simply took what was preached here, and extended it with a good knowledge of PvP psychology, and voila. The rest is history. I wish there was some way that Apolyton and Civ3 Players could be more intertwined; I see C3P as the "Apolyton of MP."

In all honesty, I'd strongly encourage some of you to come give MP a second chance - 2 to 3 hour games, starting in all eras, are quite common. We have a VERY active PBEM area as well, and a solid "epic game" (multi-session, full length, no early vic conditions) department as well. Many of the connection issues of the PTW era are no more.

Hope to see you around!

Yep, it looks like we are getting a nice little PBEM going there...

Note to newer players:

Do not be taken aback if some of the theads referenced here are as much as three years old.

The fundamentals of strategy have remained the same, regardless of the changes from Civ3 to PTW to C3C.

If something doesn't seem consistent or make sense to you (changed unit stats, how Leaders work, etc.), just post a quick question and someone will clarify ASAP.

Theseus, that's a very good clarification, but is there someone among the Great Sages who could create a "Quick Guide to Major Changes" from CIII to C3C? As you say, fundamental strategy remains the same but some specific techniques changed a lot. Pop rushing comes to mind... Of course some of the changes are more a matter of "what's in style" or perceived changes that turned out to be premature judgment (such as the nerfing of the Jaguar Warrior that Aeson showed was not so nerfed at all). [I'm just not knowledgable enough to write such a guide myself.]

Someone has already done that awhile back. It may be hard to find though.

Here's a list of changes in C3C:

http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...0&pagenumber=1

I'm guessing that is not really what you meant, rather major changes to strategy and technique, but it's a start.

How about a list of the civ specific acronyms? I'm a casual player and hop around here everynow and then when i run across a 'WTF?!' in game . . . like chopping forests don't help build wonders. . . which is goofy. Disbanding sure i can understand, cuz you'd just flood the wonder city with units.

anyway, i came here to find that out. . . but sometimes, posts are NO help because i can't read the friggin acronyms. . .

is there a list someplace?

Good idea, Monsto... I've included a link in the initial post.

(Although the whole thing is gettin' kinda old now).
