MOO Technical Problem
I'm trying to run MOO on my P75, 16MB memory with 4MB video card

When I boot it up, i get an error message that I need

10,000K of expanded memory

What does this mean? MOO ran on machines far less powerful than my P75, so I'm assuming it much be something else.

A solution would be appreciated!

EDIT: I did not INSTALL the game, but simply moved the directory from my Friend's computer to mine.

EMS is a DOS artifact. Just add it to the config.sys and reboot. Moo requires2048 if I recall.

I'm sorry, yes, I believe there was indeed a message about me needing EMS.

Can you be so kind as to give me the instructions on doing this fix?

And where is config.sys file located? I've tried installing mOO as well and have not found this file.

Thanks.

You never said if this is DOS 5.0 or 6.xx or Win9x.
At the DOS prompt yo can verify the existing of EMS with the command EMM386. If it is not installed it will say so and you will need to add device=c:dos\emm386,exe.
Rather than risking my forgetting something or mistypes or anything go to http://www.jonsullivan.com/misc/moo.php3
It has the details.
I am on XP and forget the exact process for Dos etc. But if is DOS there is only one Config.sys and it will be a hidden file so you will need to use Dir with the option to show system files to see it. Using the help will give the syntax for that. Once you find it in likely the DOS directory you can edit it and add the required statements. If it is Win9x the exploer can enable seeing hidden files. You can also go to Run and execute MSCONFIG to get to it and Notepad to add them.

Well I have gotten Moo to run in OS2/Dos5/6/NT/Win95/98and XP, but never ran on W2K. So in if you are still having trouble tomorrow, I will fire up my PIV that is running 98SE and double check the proper steps. Basically add the device with emm386 with a parm to enable 2048 in the config.sys and make a short cut to Orion.exe where you need to give the Mem tab 2048 EMS. This is off the top off my head so I may have left something out, but it is easy to do. I have put the details on this board before so ou can look instead of waiting.

Ok, I got MoO to run on my 95, and 2k (no sound) I'll leave it at that.

BTW, playing 95, i noticed there is NO sound in the starfield mode when you manage your empire, except for clicking noises. This is expected no?

Yes, that is mainly what you get. I play with the sound off anyway. It has some of the worst sound effects, very basic. That is why when I got into a battle on Ascendancy I was impressed with its sounds.

I don't think you can run any games on W2K with a few exceptions.

Can you tell me what you did to get Moo1 working on win2k? I can get it to run, but it stops accepting mouse and keyboard input after a few minutes...

You can always use a boot disk. What I do for Moo, MoM and XCOM these days. Works like a charm, and you needen't worry about upgrading your system doing bad things to your favourite golden oldies.

There is a much easier way to get it to work in win2k/xp-
if you right click on the "Orion.exe", and select properties, select the tab that "Memory" you can max out the Expanded and Extended at something like 16000. You can leave the other fields alone. all you have to do now is just double click on the game and voila, no problems with memory(sound is another issue).
Wohoo, my first post.....

That is plenty for MOO. Whenit came it ran on 386 boxes and 486-33. I plyed on them and my P60 16mb under win95. Moo is a DOS game and only use conventioal mem and expanded mem. So a 1mb box should be fine.
