What's the deal with "Registered: January 1970" ??
It seems to happen with people with high postcounts...

Back in the "old" days, the software didn't keep track of your registration date. On Feb 14, 1999 new software was used that did. People with the January 1970 or December 1969 designation are people that registered before that date... The dates shown are the default dates in the software package for people that don't have a registration date.
The only exception I can think of is DanQ, one of the owners of the site. He went in and manually changed his to read 1/08/1998

If they can be changed why don't you change yours back to some date in the Ming dynasty?

My guess is that the vBulletin software doesn't support dates prior to 1969, except birthdays.

First... many of us were members of the two individual sites long before the merger.
Second... some people joined after that date but before Feb 14, 1999.
Third... it's not my call to make. It's up to DanQ and MarkG.

Why change it to 1998 or 1999 when you can have 1969/1970.
Actually I like the fact that a lot of the old timers have all the same date. So I'd keep this date even if offered to change it to the real date.

It also makes you look more like a real net veteran when you have been around here for over 30 years.

True. It is asked frequently.
The answer could even go on to explain why the 1st of January 1970 is the dawn of time, and why some people were registered before the dawn of time.

Warvoid has a 1998 date, IIRC- or perhaps it was War4Ever or DarthVeda... I'm not sure- but more people than Dan have 1998 dates

One of the guys? So rah wasn't the only one? I need to check that.
*uses his brand new time machine from Rasbey Tech*
*sets the destination as Stanford Research Institute, January 1970*
*appears in the computer centre in SRI*
*looks for the Honeywell 316 connected to ARPANET*
*finds it and starts mixturing*
Heureka!
*manages to establish a connection*
Let's see... It should be apolyton.arpa.
*on a TV monitor appears a message that a connection has been established*
Command: go forums
Screen: Welcome to the Apolyton CS Forums!
Looks promising...
Command: message name: Rasbey title: This place sucks! body: This place is awful. There's no graphics. No avatars. You can't send PM's. You're fookers!
Screen: "This place sucks!" by Rasbey: This place is awful. There's no graphics. No avatars. You can't send PM's. You're fookers!
*waits for any response*
Screen: "Case closed" by Ming: Alright. That's enough. Off you go. That'll be two weeks in Mingapulco. Case closed.
Damn !(")()(??%%# Ming!
*exits the service and prepares for the return to 2002*
*gets back to Tampere, September 2002*
Yeap, looks like rah wasn't the only one who was around here in 1970. You should be called more like the real pioneers of the net. The only bad thing is that I was sent to Mingapulco.
Sidenotes: all the techinal details weren't correct or real, as ARPANET wasn't that sophisticated at the time. For those interested to learn more about ARPANET, I recommend all the links available on dmoz.

What's the deal with "Registered: January 1970" ??
The original mebers of this site were a generation before their time. They put the site in limbo in 1970 and went into cryonic supesion for 27 years.

The deal:
The first forum software used by this site didn't log registration dates. When later the forum was updated to a software supporting registrationdates the imported fields were left empty.
On the old forum software they got "before 02-15-99" as the the time of registration. Now with vBulletin there is no hack that changes the display of the users without logged registration time.

Time MACHINE Dec, 1969
You would have seen me using a keypunch machine and learning how to program the cardsort machine by hand wiring the control boards. I had just started learning programming. Sad to say, even back then I was a techno geek.

At least when we were at the U of I in the 70's, we had access to Plato. We were able to play online games like air fight and moon wars with people from all over the world. And needless to say, since we were playing from the home of the system, our response time was FAR better than everybody elses

Wow. You might have traveled back to 1999! Or even 2000 and said the same thing

Perhaps I should havecome straight here and registered instead of at Firaxis and later Sidgames when that dived.

I missed the opportunity of having a 1969 or 1970 date for a few days. Oh well...

I could also have easily gained that 1970 status, but I didn't surf the net for Civ II stuff right from the beginning in January 1998, when I started to use the net more actively. Dumb me.

Sometime in the future? Approximately 30 years later...
