No... I remember your country supporting Saddam Hussein...

How can you remove Saddam through the UN? Let the UN release some words demanding that Saddam resign? Woolah! Will that work? Absolutely not.

Speaking of dictators, there are actually some who accomplished a lot of good things for their countries. Of course, they can still be ruthless and butchers. Kemal Atatuerk, Pinochet, and Deng Xiaoping fall into this category.

Then there are several visionary, charismatic dictators who either made or broke(more common) their countries through their megalomaniac social engineering experiments. Obviously, Hitler, Khomeni, Mao, Pol Pot, and Stalin fall into this category.

But most of the dictators are those gangsters and petty criminals who grapped the power either through dirty maneuverings or kissing up to the right people. They don't create as much damage as those "visionary" dictators, but they are the most despicable type of persons if encountered in everyday's life. Saddam, Marcos, Diem, Aidid, and countless others belong into this lot.

So, you think Pinochet did good things for Chile?

Compared to the rest of South America, Chile was pretty well under him.

Accomplishments count more in history than some dead political prisoners.

Pinochet did a great deal for Chile... he saved it from total economic disgrace and chaos. Chile could of easily been another modern day Venezuela if it weren't for him.

The ultimate judges of these dictators are the people of their countries, not you "culturally superior" European intellectuals.

Uh huh. The people? Or are you refering to a small portion of the population? I doubt the people wanted to. Afterall Pinochet is responsible for Chile's economy prosperity.
