Global warming and new special fields
In my last game I settled like an idiot - but had'nt the money to build mass transits and solar plants.
So I got a global warming by the pollution skulls that I didn't manage to clear.
My recently founded cities (brought them at once to size 3 by 3 engineers) celebrated - a real population explosion, cause I had Mike's and Bachs and CfC and a lux rate of 40 % (tax 20% - thank you, Mercury, God of Trade, for your benefits and the income!)

I built a lot of engineers (up to 7 per city) to clear the mess (jungle and swamp and pollution)
Side effect: New special fields ! Spice, buffalo, fruits etc - did you notice that, too?
I think those have been former "hidden specials".

That could be, even if I've never had huge global warming so I'm not a good tester.

Global warming will change grassland, to jungle or other types of inhospital terrain. Specials always appear in a fixed pattern on the map, but are not visible in grassland tiles, so if a grasslands tile is changed to another type, it is possible that a "hidden" special will be revealed. You might want to play some with the map editor, to see how terrain types affect which specials appear, and to see the various patterns that are used for them.

I had GW in some games. I didn't notice new specials, but many grassland tiles become swamp near water, and plain inland. In particular, rich islands become starving cities.
The Solo explaination seems OK, as noted specials are on jungle or plain.

Did the pattern of specials stay the same - did cities that had specials keep them in the same relative locations?

Spice and Fruit are "junky" terrain(Swamp/Jungle/Desert/Tundra) specials. Grassland hides them, but you can predict where the specials should be from the pattern. Sea levels might change too, revealing or swallowing offshore specials.

I've never permitted a Global Warming, so I've never seen the effects...

Gotta love spice and gems. It's the only way to get new swamps or jungles, but the price is high and the results are uncontrollable.

@elephant
Yes, the patterns stayed the same - no "new" patterns
