Draft problem
This is another question from a Civ3 newbie.

I cant draft citizens in the cities I just conquered. Is that because they are foreign nationals ?
That seems to be the only viable reason, since Im on communism, have all the ressources needed and linked to the city I want to draft, no resistent, etc...

Plz feedback ASAP.

Are they big enough? IIRC you need to be size 6 or better.

I know there is a size limit. Exactly what, I'm not sure of. I've rarely drafted in my games. The only times were when things went seriously wrong.

I usually draft in my "other continent" cities when attacked.
I think that using draft on your own continent is a waste of happy faces.

Drafting is not a function of skills, it is a strategy. I have not used that strategy in a very long time. I can not find anything in the manual or the guide that says anything about the size of the pop for drafting.

You are right that it's a strategy. I find that the only time I'm willing to take the population and unhappiness double hit in a city is when it's going to be lost within a turn or two and I want to give the conqueror a little 'gift'.

But it's definitely based on city size. Make a test case (I do this for every rule I'm confused about) and you'll see.

If I draft, most of the time it's just to disband them again in highly corrupt cities
(mech inf. is pretty good for this purpose, about 25shields)

The last time I used the draft was to replace all my vet MI guarding my cities with conscripts. The resultant wave of vet MI crushed everyone.

Well, my strategy was to let my large army flow through the ennemy and draft behind them to secure the conquered cities and dont use vet cavalry to guard pop 2 bases. I dont know if it remains a good strategy with the pop restriction, but Ill make tests.

Thanx to all of you.

I wonder if they could ad "National Draft", eg. draft from every city that meets the requirements with a single click of the mouse. And the draft button doesn't update if I move to the next city in city view. That's a bug, and annoying one.

You need to have more than six citizens to draft, and the seventh+ has to be from your own nationality. I wouldn't draft from newly conquered 7 pop city, though; it might cause a flip more easily.

I don't think I would ever use this button.

Hmm... I thought that disbanding cities that have lots of draft unhappiness just switches that unhappiness to the next nearest of your cities. That's what kept happening to me when I tried that a few months ago... has that changed in the latest version?

Edit: Oh wait... I misread your post. You're disbanding the UNIT not the city. Interesting...

I spend a lot of my time nurturing modern era empires to greatness. 27 shields from each conscript MI really gets the courthouses and temples speeded up in newly conquered lands. Especially when you have built Longevity and have a population problem in your core cities.

Wonder how well that applies to early conquest?

I love drafting, I believe the citizenry should get stuck-in, lend a hand in repelling the vile invader. The war-weariness that results makes the game more challenging anyway. Of course once the empires borders are stable, there's no more need for shovelling poorly paid, poorly equiped and poorly trained conscripts over the top, ala The Chechyen War. Usually they are only drafted for defence, to free up vets, divert enemy attacks and police unruly cities. Oh yeah- and to protect the colonies.
