Map trading
I've searched this topic but the answer is not clear to me.

If you've explored the 'enemies' territory already - is there any point in trading TM's?

If you don't agree to a trade - does that increase the animosity toward you?

You might get some information on tile improvements since you explored the area the last time from a maptrade, and that could under rare circumstances be usefull, but mostly I would not trade a known map for more than a few gold.

I do not trade my map unless Ihave my land under control. I mean my borders must be violated to pass to any open area. Otherwise settler will be showing up.

AI continues to propose a map trade, or requests your map as one part of a trade deal, long after everyone has a completed World Map.

Like others, I withhold map information until I have settled every open space that I can reach. Then I will trade my map, since it may save a few gold in trading for something I want.

And later on in the game, I'll glady trade maps just to maintain friendly relations.

Interesting. I must be one of the few players who will sell his map when there is still space left to settle. I don't mind if the AI settles land I know about, I'll just take it from him later.

That is an option and many use it. If they are on your land mass, it can be a big problem. They may send units to that city and you can not stop them with out a war. It may not flip for a long time. If they come from another land mass, then it is less worry as they will not be mounting a massive incursion and have no culture links.

yes, I see your point. If I were a builder (was in civ 2, prefer to make war in civ 3) then it would be very, very beneficial to not sell your map.

Of course if I see him making a beeline across my land to settle somewhere and I want, I have been known to use horsemen, workers, swordsmen, etc. to keep his settler/spearman pair from reaching the promise land.

That will work. If you can get your culture border all the way across the area that the AI will have to cross and you are strong, they will not come through.
