I think the same algorithm is used by the game to figure out all goto routes, and since they can be tricky, it might be difficult to figure out routes from AI cities.

Thus, stations very close to cities work best in cases where there may be doubt about which path a route uses.

You can disrupt a route by pillaging connecting roads and rails, or by ocuppying part of an enemy's route with a military unit. This is another reason for using stations, instead on long vulnerable routes.

Distance between cities has no effect on a route's path, but the bonuses only work for cities that are close enough to each other (within 22 tiles).
