Location of Capitol
In another thread (discussion of wonders) 123John321 reminded me that if we lose our capital city we effectively lose our spaceship.

Now, occassionally, the AI does get a good offensive operation going. In this game, we need a number critical factors to ensure success including maintaining a technological gap over our rivals, a high production rate and maintaining a secure capital.

Whilst the existing location on Capitol is quite good, perhaps we shoud move our capital city to a more defensible location. If the citizen vote to move the capital, the move should be undertaken sooner rather than later so as we have ample time to build roads, irrigation, mines etc.

Therefore the vote I put to you is should we move our capital to a more defensible location? The poll will last two days. If we have to move, I will find suitable locations for comment.

One more comment, obviously any new location selected will have to be developed in terms of irrigation and so fourth....there is no point putting a a city on a mountain (for example) if you can not feed it.

It's quite safe where it is now...reason: take a look at the entire map...it's quite centered and there is no way the AI could launsh an decent attack without us noticing this a dozen turns ahead.

I say leave it where it is...the defence-bonus would melt like snow when the AI decides to attack with rockets( and they always do this with a large enough quantity of them if needed)

We are safe were we are now and by the time weapons become dangerous we will probably have the best defended capitol money/shields can get us...but that's a far away future

If we weren't somewhat close to getting democracy and thus eliminating our corruption problems, or if we were being aggressively attacked by the Japanese, I think might be a good idea. But I don't think the specific location of the capital will matter for long.

We already get some good protection just by having it near the south pole (a complete accident, but you take good luck where you find it), and it is a long sea voyage (which we can guard against) for anyone to attack us directly by ship. None of the civs we know are even researching Navigation, so it will be a long time before a powerful fleet could approach either side of the capital even to drop of land units.

I've heard that Wonders can operate more strongly when in the capital. I don't know if that is correct, but if so, that would be a good reason to leave it where it is.

But we don't have to build all our Wonders in the same city. That *is* asking for trouble...

Don't move the capital, it's a wate of resources. If it ever gets attacked, you'll be in such a bad way by then that you'll be close to losing anway!

Brilliance from the "Stupid". No, seriously, he has a good point. If we are attacked, we cannot likely make our goal. He just put it very succinctly.

Thank you for the (mostly) intelligent and concise responses. Perhaps our glorious President could enlighten us with his celestial wisdom by adding more than two nonsensical words and a glyph to the discussion?

As my old man used to say, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. But when answering questions, sometimes it is better to remain silent, and be thought a fool, rather than known as one.

Peace gentlemen

DON'T MOVE CAPITOL.

Enormous waste of resources to do so. Cheaper and easier to just defend it intelligently.

Don't move it. Defend it, keep a dip in it to bribe lone attackers or barbs. Patrol the waterway approaches. By the time the AI can mount an effective attack, we should have rr's and the ability to pile it with defenders and a counterstrike.
