When i play Homm3, i disable following overpowered spells:

Town portal, implosion, fly, armaggedon, dimension door, clone, and slow.

those are my favorite spells (unbalanced thou, imho)

another reason that i disabled those spells is to keep all 4 schools of magic balanced

i also disable certain worthless spells such as misfortune(just totally worthless) and slayer (bloodlust is 300% better)

So you cast bloodlust first, and then you cast slayer, netting you 400% worth of benefit.

Also, if you disable slow, shouldn't you also disable haste, which has similar effect in the opposite direction?

Clone is one sweet spell... especially on ranged attackers
indeed very powerful...

Armageddon i never use - it hurts my own troops!

Implosion is powerful, but it's only worthwhile with very powerful heroes, and with very powerful heroes usually come big armies, so the huge damage isn't so grave, good to wipe out a goblin legion though

Slow is just one spell you can't miss, it just adds tactics to a battle, it is, just like haste one of the essential spells of the game, you can win or lose a battle with it!

I always found chain lightning quite useful, and shield when playing small battles

The spell i find a bit overpowered is Blind, i use it constantly...
say the enemy has a big army, and you manage to defeat all of his troops except a stack of cyclops kings, when you slay your last remaining enemy you cast all kinds of weakening spells on him (of course the cyclops kings have been blinded throughout the battle), or enhance your own troops, and then have a go at him, you will lose far less troops...

You can blind every turn, so in my opinion, it is very very powerful

i also find berserk quite funny to use

barrier spells, mines, protection from air etc are all pretty useless, and if you have cure, you don't need dispel anymore.. the 5th level spells of summoning elementals is also pretty weak.. for a 5th level spell...

Protection from air etc. are useful for neutralizing a particular spell that your opponent is using on you. As an example, I've seen the AI cast Protection from Earth to forestall me from using Slow (result being that I used haste instead ). There are some instances where I would probably use Protection from Fire to forestall the AI from using Blind (IIRC that Blind is a Fire spell).

If I can get expert water magic heroes, I like to use Bless, which is one I haven't seen mentioned yet.

Trajanus, equip one heroe with black dragons, gold dragons, phoenixes and/or efreets, and then use armageddon. These four are immune to fire or spells of level 4. Of course, getting a hero to learn it, plenty of spell power, finding the spell in a tower and then building 5-10 black dragons isn't easy... But if you do, it it is ridicously overpowered... Doesn't really matter what the opponent has (unless it is one of the four above), you kill most of his army the first turn anyway, particularly since all the four above are so fast you get to cast the first spell.

But the most important spell is definetly Town Portal!! Mastery of Earth and TP = instant reinforcements every single week. Not to mention the only real way to hinder the AI from taking your castles unexpectedly.

I think there r much better 4th level spells than slayer, including prayer, chain lighting etc. Slayer its almost worthless if u consider its level.

One time with my 15 spell power warlock (with sorcery specialty) i could destroy an entire Tower army that included 8 titans with only 2 armarggedon! and i only had 8 black dragon......

In my experience, slow can be more powerfull than Prayer in certain occations... besides, Earth magic already has good 1st level magic such as Shield and stone skin; air magic's only good level 1 spell is haste.

I agree, but u know that any hero can use them (no need to learn Fire school)

Quote:

Indeed, very powerfull, but i left it, because it was one of the few reasons to learn Fire school; one of the main reasons that i disable spells is to balance all 4 schools of magic.

Map editor? (its very easy to learn....)

Well, if he doesn't like playing with them... I don't think it'll hurt the map if you disable spells, perhaps fly could be a problem, .... some maps have special locations or locations you have to reach by using fly...

Chain lightning. It does significant damage, but more importantly, it looks really cool.

Slow rules all, specially if one uses powerful ranged stacks.

No, i disable those spells only on my favorite maps that i frequently play. Downloaded maps and campaings i use all spells. I mean..... could anyone beat the fairly dragon campaign map (armarggedon's blade) without town portal??? I think i will be impossible (at least ur 1st try)

my favorite spells are all first level spells, best when cast by an expert.
haste, slow, shield, stone skin & bless.
especially haste turns combat into blitzkrieg (if you are playing castle that is)
I only rarely use blind.
magic missile is the most used damege inflicting spell by me.

Gotta agree with Andemagne on that. Expert makes those cheap 1st level spells wonderously effective, and any hero can learn them and reach expert in one magic.

Shield: hand-to-hand damage reduced by 30% (Expert Effect)
Stone Skin: defence rating is increased by 6 (Expert Effect)

Ande, you forgot to mention about shield and stoneskin at expert level: All friendly troops effected.

DC, you should have a pdf file of the manual on the Platinum Edition CD…
