Metroid Prime
It's supposed to come out next week for the Cube, and good reviews are coming in:

Though the review is locked, apparently IGN gave it a 9.8 out of 10, the highest score ever for a gamecube game. Oh, here's a synopsis of the review from another board:

Quote:
Ok, here's a quick synopsis of IGN's review.

The game stays VERY true to the gameplay of Super Metroid. The emphesis is on exploring and puzzle-solving, not fighting. Although the fighting is there, and it is NOT always easy. In fact at times it gets unfair, but you'll eventually learn how to fight each enemy. Oh, and the ****ing massive bosses are back in force. Quote: Think Super Metroid, but in 3d.

Suprisingly, the plot is extremely deep. It's up there with Eternal Darkness's story.

All the weapons and powerups are back except the Dash and Screw attack, but there's some new ones. Sorry, the review has no spoliers on new items.

The graphics are incredible and highly detailed, and ALWAYS at 60 FPS. RAWK. No bump-mapping, but it's not missed... Progressive scan is supported, by the way, and apparently that makes it even better.

Kenji Yamamoto, who made the Super Metroid soundtrack, is back and even better than ever. YEEEEEEEESSSSSS. Plus the enviornmental sounds and other sound effects rock. Apparetly this is the best sounding game on GameCube.

25-30 hours, more for 100%. Pres: 10, Graph: 9, Sound: 10, Gameplay: 10, Lasting: 9.

Final score: 9.8. That's the highest score a GC game has gotten at IGN yet.
Apparently it got a perfect 10 from EGM.

All in all it's sounding pretty good. I hope my brother decides to pick it up so it will be waiting for me when I come home for thanksgiving.

I just came back from Gamestop and picked up O.R.B.; some guy was asking about Metroid Prime.

I never played the metroid games really (maybe once), but I hear the series is good.

It's a first person shooter (kind of) but you can't strafe. Might be something to keep in mind despite these crazy reviews. Time Splitters 2 also got great reviews and that game sucks.

FPS is all about strafing. I can't imagine playing without it.

No, it isn't. It's an adventure game, not a shooter.

Also, you circle strafe around enemies when you lock on to them, apparently.

PS Here's an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto.

I've played the demo twice now, and it definitely seems like a good game...

But from what I've seen in the demo (which is from a couple-months-old build and only one level, mind you) the controls seems a bit awkward to me. Other than that it was great.

The replay value looks like it won't be much though, which is why I'll end up renting MP instead of buying it. No multiplayer, the only incentives to play it again is to "unlock art galleries" and something to do with a GBA (Which I don't have).

Gamespot gave it a 9.7:

i'll probably end up renting mp too. 20-30hrs of gameplay isn't worth a purchase no matter how good it is imo. i'd rather rent it a few times to beat it than have to buy it. plus half the time my blockbuster is out of the game i want so i get free rentals. i know i'm very jaded but i only buy games w/ replay value(multiplayer, co-op, etc) or much more gameplay than 30hrs(say like 60hrs i'd probably buy).

one of the guy's(his alias is zoid) who worked on this game also worked on my favorite game of all time - quakeworld.

I'm with you, pg, I only tend to buy games with lots of replay value. You kinda have to for $50US.

Damn straight I'm buying it! $50's only a week's work, so it's no biggie. The thing is, the only place to buy games within 50 miles is the KMart where I work. No problem, they're getting it for sure. HOWEVER, it comes with a 'bonus' wavebird controller, and therefore costs $25 extra. I'm going to try to use my 'connections' in the electronics to see if I can't get just the game...

Yeah! I'm coming home friday for the cat-griz game, so assuming you get it this week, I should have some time to play it then, and I'll be back a few days later for Thanksgiving.

It's in Montananese, spoken only by crazed, anti-government types and other humans damned to live in the barren wastes of Montana. You should thank you preferred deity that you don't understand a word of it...

Actually, yes, we are brothers. He's off in college, and I'm the goony little HS senior still stuck at home with the parents.

The 'cat-griz' part is Montananese, however. And only east Montana is barren.

But I digress. I rather enjoyed the demo, but had no sound so I don't know what the effects are like.

There's no need to be upset, as I don't really have any room to insult Montana. All of Nebraska is barren...

What I find interesting is that while Metroid Prime looks great, nobody is mentioning Metroid Fusion... which look like a GBA version of Super Metroid with all new areas and gadgets of its own.

I've heard it's just like Super Metroid with a few new moves(which is a good thing), but it's only six hours long. That's not worth the price, for sure.

UPDATE: Metroid Prime kicks ass. From several different directions at once. This gets a hearty recommendation.
