Well, I may be lazy, but I would just start with Smacx, and play the origional 7 factions at first. Starting with Smacx, you don't have to unlearn anything, and the games are so similar that IMHO you won't lose anything by never playing 'classic' Smac. Playing the original factions simplifies the game somewhat (no aliens), and many discussions exist on this site regarding the characteristics and strategies of the first 7 factions. Once you get a handle on the game, you can expand your horizons, adding complexity as you are ready.
