does "take this deal or suffer" ever work?
i have problem demanding tributes from AI as the AI does to humans like when they threaten to declare war unless u give them territory map and 100 gold. so when i demand something from the AI even just a map, they never want to give, and i click "take this deal or suffer" repeatedly and they just get real furious but never give it up. also, i ve heard if u keep clicking "take this deal or suffer" u can get them to declare war but no matter how many times i click it they never declare war but just get more angry with me. what is the purpose of this diplomacy choice if it never does anything?

It has worked for me. However, when it worked I was intentionally trying to piss them off, and was surprised that they agreed.

I think it depends on how big your military is in proportion to thiers, tech difference, etc.

So basically it only works well (at all) with vassal states.

Just like you Kingof the apes, I tried it only to piss-off the AI and try and start a war without having to be the aggressor. I was quite surprised when they gave it to me! I was playing on marla's world map and had started in europe with many close neighbors, 2 of whom I had knocked out by taking the capitol INCREDIBLY early which gave me a huge advantage early (playing on regent). My military, land, and tech ourpaced greece when I demanded tribute. they were in my way too and since I really wanted them to get pissed and declare war, I was kinda bummed when they caved.

Of course I declared war right away anyhow and wiped them up.

try taking a big stack of your guys and putting them within view of the enemy. ie, not within their cultural border, but next to a city that hasn't grown yet. The AI will see you massing up troops and maybe think twice before telling you to go fk yourself. if their millitary is way bigger than yours (your advisor says "compared to them, our millitary is weak") don't even think about it.

hope this helps

Concur with previous posters, it works but you must be spoling for a fight and have a superior military to theirs.

Aah, so that's how it works. It happened once before but I couldn't remember why...

Yeah, this is exactly when it works: when you don't want it to work

In a recent game, I was the aztecs and decided to take out the French. They were in an island south of my continent. My military advisor said that my army was bigger than theirs. I amassed a great number of troops and a put them in a lot of boats. My D-Day was ready to start. But I had to make them declare war on me first. I demanded tribute or else... And they accepted it!

As the other poster said, I declared war on them anyway and wiped their puny empire up.

I only use it when the AI has troops in my territory and I want to get into a war with them. I ask them ridiculous demands over and over, until they are furious, then ask them to leave my territory. 2 times out of 3, they will declare war on me, just as I intended!
