Is Civ II MP dead?
Well... what do you think.

The PTW experiences so far haven't been perfect, but Firaxis is working on it.

I still know a bunch of hardcores that will play Civ II MP, but will it get harder and harder to find a game in the future.

Is there any life left in this classic game... are we doomed to playing PTW for our MP Civ fix...

Civ is just plain dead period. Civ3 will never be as popular as Civ2 was.

Gee, Ming, I wish you'd let Deity, Horse, Hydey and me know Civ 2 was dead before we started another new game last night.

We're just waiting for Horse to troll in the new game and we're going to ban him.

I don't think PTW will have much of an impact, since the only players that played much civ2 before it came out aren't likely to stop.

Of course there will always be some small groups of fanatics who will be playing... But for a while there, it seemed like new people were still popping up every once in a while. Now it seems the exact opposite. We are seeing less and less of some of the old regulars.

Only 42 people bothered to even sign up for the Civ II MP Group... Not a very good sign in the long run.

Thats only the people who visit this site.

But things are quieting down at the zone too.

There are always enough people to play with when I want to though so I'm not overly worried.

Most people that I play with hate civ3 anyway

I doubt it... All my experiences in Civ 3 so far point to a game that will be over by 0 AD without house rules...

Small map games will be dominated by worker stealing rushes, and the "Warrior Gambit" strategy (Which will induce alot of quitting if it doesn't work).

I think Civ 2 will be fine, as long as you can continue to make it fun for all involved. That means modding, changing the rules.txt and so on.

That's funny, when I opined a few months back that civ3 as it stood would make a poor MP game due to (amongst other quibbles) overly strong incentives for early militarisation relative to other goals most people disagreed with me.

I've played exactly one Civ3 single player game and I have no intentions to play another one.
Mrs.SmartFart and I going out tonight and if we doesn't come back too drunk I'll be happy to participate in your game if there will be one this saturday.

I've been quite busy last 2 months and played only 2 duels against Makeo and War4ever. We never continued, but thats normal.

It better not be, before I've tried it

Seriously, it seemed that when CivIII came out, everyone here bought it, played it, and slowly came back to II... I suspect the same thing will happen with PTW.

CivII will fade away, rather than die. Eventually, it'll be like playing Pac-Man.

weird, we're obviously still noobs. (even though we played III games before) At first we played turnless. With the lag, you'd be trying to move a unit and the turn had advanced and all you cities were revolting. You also have to be careful on how the turn clock is set. With any type of lag it moves way way too quick. It has potential, but the opening still lacks the excitement buzz you get off of civ II mp.

It was funny that while we were testing, I'd host and by the time War would get into the game, two or three other players would be in. hahahahahhaha

Yes, if you want to limit the game, a password is recommended. It was humorous, but it means there were a lot of people out there looking. Which could be promising, if we can figure out the right settings. Some of the game options lean towards one night stands so it could be fun. But still no excitement.

RAH
after playing we had to play a II game to clean our palate.

Didn't we see a thread similar to this 6 months or a year ago. I believe it was Eyes who said it was dead at the time. Well since then he's changed his name 4 or 5 times but civ II lives on.

Anyone wanna bet if there is a post like this one year from now.

Yes the civ3 chat interface is obnoxious, i believe we were both trying to chat to each other, but somehow he wasn't getting my messages.....

they appear right in the game on the screen, on the left where it tells you what your cities are building (when they finish something that is)

totally lacks excitement, often couldn't finish my turns in time, units wouldnt' move , the lag was bad, and we had very fast ping times and it was a duel....

however , once we get through this initial phase, i believe that the game will be fun, but only for players who like TBS style games.

if you want excitement and fast paced, the civ series is weak....go play AOE a FPS style game....

TBS is for those who wish to take their time.....

in the end it will be playable, as it stands right now, its not a great game.....but the SP mode of PTW is decent.

and yes, Civ 2 was definitely needed to remove the foul taste civ3 left

linguo is dead.

as soon as i get bored of AoE again I'll be back to Civ II MP... it seems i've been alternating between the two games for the last 5 years (except for a fling with diablo II a few years back)
