BTW I was also serious that Greece is all and all the rest is crap.

Take medical care for example:

Western Europe ranks as world's healthiest region

By Zosia Kmietowicz

LONDON, Mar 25 (Reuters Health) - Western Europe is the healthiest region in the world, new rankings of health systems show. But the survey, which places the US and UK relatively low, suggests that spending a lot of money is not enough to guarantee high standards of health.

The survey of the health status of people in 175 countries, released on Monday, ranked nine Western European countries in its top 10, with Belgium heading the list followed by Iceland, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Italy and Norway.

Australia is the highest placed non-Western European country in the list, in joint tenth place with Germany and Denmark. The United States was ranked 17th, just behind Israel, while the UK came in 23rd place, after Greece.

The index measured the health status of individuals by looking at the amount each country spent on its people's health and at health indicators including life expectancy, infant immunisation rates and death rates of mothers and babies. It was developed by World Markets Research Centre, a company that analyses businesses.

Countries from sub-Saharan Africa dominated the end of the list, with Sierra Leone in 175th place.

Many of these nations have the lowest expenditures on healthcare and carry the heaviest burden of communicable diseases, with rural communities often having no access to healthcare at all, the survey shows.

But devoting a large proportion of gross domestic product (GDP) to healthcare does not guarantee a nation's health, according to the researchers.

"Interestingly, those countries with the highest healthcare expenditure are not necessarily the healthiest," Michelle Perkins, who led the research, told Reuters Health.

"The main reason for this is that they tend to adopt a 'we can buy the cure' attitude, as opposed to concentrating on preventing the ailment in the first instance. The prime example of this is the US, where the vast amounts of cash injected into the latest drug developments and pharmaceutical technology fail to be reflected in the overall health of the nation."

The US spends 13.1% of its GDP--or $4,180 annually per capita--on health, compared to Belgium's 8.9% ($2,172), the figures show. The UK's National Health Service spends 7% of GDP, or $1,532 per capita, on health.

Andy Bell, a spokesperson for the King's Fund, an independent health service think tank in the UK, stressed that when comparing different countries' healthcare systems it is important to look closely at the elements they are ranked on.

Elements such as access to healthcare, efficiency, fairness, quality and choice may be weighted in a way that not everyone would agree with, Bell told Reuters Health.

"Ultimately the elements that a healthcare system is based on is about political desires and you have to take these into account when looking at the outcomes of a survey. For example, in terms of fairness of financing the UK is probably the best healthcare system in the world, but in other respects it is outranked by other countries," he commented.

"We cannot comment on the robustness of the present survey, but a comparison of the healthcare systems of countries is something worth doing because it is important for countries to see what others are doing."

we're so healthy we don't need a good healthcare system.

actually, I don't know what are they talking about in the WHO survey. Israeli healthcare is rather good, really. My father got himself a liver transplant, and gets most of the medication for free.

Yeah, but that is still a minority when one considers that the population of Europe is over 650 million. That's rather like saying a white male should be president of the US, since they happen to be the largest of the minorities.

I say, let it be a Dutch president.

How about Luxembourgish Jean-Claude Juncker seems fairly competent. Got to remember that French people won't vote for a German and vice versa, English people won't vote for French or german and all that stuff. A smaller country has a far greater chance to get someone in.

What fun is that? Why all that hard, exhausting work? Where does it get you? What is the good of it? I think that the euros should designate Luxembourg in a similar way that D.C. was designated and build a new capital there.

No!

Not a second before the commision is nothing but a simple government and the elected members are some, who REALLY think, they are doing the a decent job (and that they ACT so) and that they are not only taking care of the own business/personal econony.

sh?t happens when the feelings runs too fast.

I do not want to see anyone.

I do not want a president, before the "administration" is working.

First, a membership of the paliament should be wanted because "one" have a job to do there. And not as some sort of an retire-job (or becuase the seat back home is occupied by another). Ohh and no because of the lack of control on how they use their "own" budgets either.

Second: The commision should be elected EITHER by the paliament OR direct by the people of EU.

When these things are working - then it is time to look for some kind of a president ( some might call it a Chairman ....... ).

This will come when the EU will become the federal government of europe, with some real powers, with a EU constitution, an EU court, an EU federal police, etc. etc. EU economic policy.

Our own Martti Ahtisaari. He's a good negotiator, and worked in UN.

Also, during the last decade, he has done everything what a good president has done,
stuff like corruption, rewarding cruel dictators with shiny medals, and getting hurt at Swedish
nightclub while being drunk as dell.

Uhm, Azazel, if I were you I wouldn't be telling everyone this. I hope you do know that most organs come from poor Moldavians and Turks... Turkey has a very good organ maffia that sells organs to the Israelis, and very often they get their organs from Moldavians (Moldavia, which is a rather small and unknown country in Europe) for just about $5000. In most cases these people are so desperate they will get their organs (or parts of it, if they still wish to keep on living that is...) removed (a kidney for example).

A stupid thing, because those few dollars are spent within months and they're back again where the started, but physically weaker and so even less capable of doing hard labour..

Btw, paiktis, your big list there is bollox

I KNOW that the quality of our medical qualities are better than those of say the netherlands...

here you can go to every kind of doctor you want, instantly, and for most treatments you get nearly everything back from social securities ( so here EVERYONE, be it poor or rich, can have the same access to treatments that cost a lot of money)

I see that in many other countries, you have to go to the same doctor (if you want to visit a specialist you have to ask your regular doctor etc... amazing stuff!) and you can't take another one, even if you move out of town to some place 100km further, you have to keep going to that particular doctor, which is absolute **** of course...

WE ROCK
