What in the World - am I stuffed?
Let's say I did actually go out and buy PTW, would I be punished for my love of Civ?

I pre-ordered CivIII LE back in the cold days of October 2001. It was a pretty tin, full of CD. The thing is, it was the US verion, ordered from Amazon. Now, I am not going to do that again. If I was to but PTW, I'd do it over here, in Europe. It would be the English version, but not the US version.

I saw this on the CivIII site:
For the US version only and is completely incompatible with any European version.

Does this mean that the US version is not compatible with, say, the UK version?

How about you just buy the US version on amazon.com and have them ship it to you in Europe?

The problem is that the US patch doesn't work on the European version of PTW. However a European patch is available.

AFAIK the downside of getting a US version in Europe is shipping charges and the downside of getting a European version is that the patches may be released later than the equivalent US one.

I think there is only one version of Civ3 and the European PTW works OK with my copy.

My advise would be: buy the US version now that you still can. You will get things earlier and do not take the risk that Infogrames messes up again. It is one company less that can take the fun away

I think so, I think the differences are the cd-protection, not the actual game code.

hmm.

not that it wouldn't suprise me at this point, that infogrames would blunder that as well....

I have played three players in a LAN, 2 players on UK CIV III and UK PTW, and one player is UK CIV with US PTW.

None of them are patched. It works fine

So you know that US PTW works with UK Civ3.....but does UK PtW work with US Civ3? It may not. Remember the fiasco with the Italian PtW said to work with US Civ3, but in the end NOT.

Personally I find it difficult (from a support point of view) to understand why on earth we have this situation at all. To roll out 2 completely different copy protections is one thing, to have US/UK/German/French/Italian/Spanish versions that all require seperate patching (civ3) is totally inefficient, and then to produce a PTW that has to be different also on top of this ... Im unsure how much of this baddly planned mess is Firaxis's fault, or Infograms .. but If I was a sofware company, and my distribution company made the mess they have, Id be thinking of moving elsewhere.

Anyway, Switch, your right, unless somebody tests it out, we have no way of knowing if it works in reverse .. If it does, you should add the European patch to the European version of PTW.

It is a huge mess, I think its all infograme's fault. they do all the localizations/translations/marketing so the blame is with them, IMO. They have proven to be an incompetent bunch, its a shame that they own all the titles they do, Civ, SMAC, MOO, etc. a damn shame.

At least they could give us the choice to buy the US version in Europe (that is without the postage etc. to be paid). Why should I want a UK version instead of a US version? Totally beats me how these guys are thinking. To make it worse, if you finally think you know all about it you get the message "voullez vous......" in FRENCH.
