Anime - the point is??
I just do not see the interest in this stuff at all. It's just cartoons, surely. Some people need to grow up!

Explain.

And as for anime being only cartoons, I'm sorry, you're wrong. There's also hentai. Oh, and giant robots saving the world. And lots of tentacles .

How does "it's just cartoons" lead into "some people need to grow up"? Are cartoons just for kids? Why?

Explain.

anime is simply another genre, like comedy or drama, only… different in a japanese sort of way…
consider pokemon to be the "full house" of anime, while films like Spirited Away and Metropolis are the "Citizen Kane"'s of the genre…

I must side with Loin. I'm 20 years old, and still love watching Tex Avery cartoons and the numerous WWII cartoons (Like Gremlins from the Kremlin, where Hitler tries to bombs moscow himself) or those that have WWII suggestions (Lik Batty Baseball, where the camera pans across the feild and where there should be a player, there is a sign post that reads "1A", and then you see the pitcher that has "4F" on his back ).

You know, I know a few people like you Boddington's, who take life too seriously, who don't like watching cartoons or comedy movies (Mel Brooks is KING!). It's just sad that some people don't have a sense a humor.

I'm not Bristish, but I will say this:

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

So if you don't like cartoons and if you don't like humour movies (which, you have to admit, are often awful), you take life too seriously and have no humour? Interesting...

For the record, I don't dislike cartoons in general, but there's something in anime that annoys me to no end. I guess there are good anime movies, but it's just not for me I guess.

I am now trying to restrain myself from ranting my face off...

What do you mean "Just cartoons"?

Cartoons are the mirror of our society, they are the legends of our time, the teachers of our children, and a lot of adults need just as much teaching.

Cartoons are not just for kids, they are entertainment for all. Everything from the Smurfs to GI Joe. And if this makes me immature and in need of growing up, well I read books too, oh dear!

And Anime IS for adults. Children should never be anywhere near such movies as Akira, Urotsukidoji etc. or they might end up like me.

Then there's the intermediate range like DBZ which is for kids but has a lot adult themes.

Oh no, Boddies disapproves, whatever will happen to me now?

Could someone please ban him (again)?

BTW Monolith, I believe medium is the appropriate word, not genre.

Bas: A good troll does not mean one that gets responses. A good troll is a troll that accidently leads into an interesting discussion wherein the trollee itself has long since left, but that's annoyingly rare.

Anyway, I used to hate anime, and now enjoy some of it. But Spink is trying to mislead us with the "just cartoons" bit. Who cares if they're cartoons or amazing works of art or whatever? I enjoy some of 'em. That's good enough for me to keep watching. If you don't enjoy them, fine. I can sympathize with that too, but I'm not changing my habits.

Starting trolls hoping to see people streaming forward to defend anime as a universal art form and hope for support from those who don't is just annoying. I hope this thread dies a miserable death, and if you're ever interested in starting a serious discussion about the merits of anime, do it in a different thread with actual points and examples.

From people I have encountered, those that dislike comedy movies and cartoons, are always some sort of holier then thow, self proclaimed intellecturals that seem to know all and are without fault in anything. They tend to act as if they reach some sort of nervana on earth.

Sure it's a big world, but this is from what I've seen so far. I've met about 20, 25 people like this so far. I tend to remember people like this.

--"I just do not see the interest in this stuff at all. It's just cartoons, surely."

It's just another medium. What you're saying is equivalent to writing off classical Greek painting and sculptures as porno because of all the naked people.

Anime suffers from the same limitations as everything else. Sturgeon's Law, commercialization, etc. But there are some really good works. Give one or two a try. Something like Grave of the Fireflies, if you like drama, for instance.

--"Some people need to grow up!"

Yeah, and we're all cheering for you.

--"There's also hentai. Oh, and giant robots saving the world. And lots of tentacles"

And giant robots with tentacles saving the world... and you can't forget school uniforms.

--"but there's something in anime that annoys me to no end"

Japanese art and storytelling has its own traditions, many of which have been carried into manga and anime. Some people aren't going to like the style, it's just a matter of taste.

--"What do you mean "Just cartoons"?"

You can blame Disney for a lot of this. The whole "cartoons are just for kids" perception. I think a lot of people who think this haven't really paid any attention to, for instance, Bugs Bunny.

--"And Anime IS for adults."

Some of it is. Some of it, like Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar, is targeted at kids.

--"Oh no, Boddies disapproves, whatever will happen to me now?"

You can rest easy in the assurance that, since Boddington dislikes it, it must be good.

--"I think many Europeans think it's really strange to be a huge fan of something made by Japanese..."

If so, those Europeans don't know their own history very well. A lot of the famous European painters, like Van Gogh and Whistler, were influnced by Japanese artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige.
This worked the other way as well of course, and the Japanese works were influenced by Westerners.

Trust me, I'm european....

Many of us do like Japanese culture. In France the Anime culture rivals that of America. In fact it's better, because nothing is censored. DBZ, Nikki Larson, Ramna, Knights of the Zodiac, all those were in France before in the US.

A good troll gets at least some people to agree with and defend the troll's position.

As such, this troll was a failure. Better luck next time.

Well put. If you're that kinky and are into that stuff, kudos to you. Just warn me before walk into your house if you have that stuff on.

But I will admit in anime, those weird pink, purple, green, blue, etc... hair colors only work on anime girls. It's just not right in reality.

I agree with Boddys Troll.

Something that bothers me about those cartoons is that it is impossible to distinguish if the character is asian or white.

And anime girls always have perfect bodies, its unnecessary and unrealistic, no one would ever feel excited by a cartoon.

Because sometimes anime is better than a "real film" (I'm going to assume you mean "live-action film").

From what I understand, is that anime people look western with the eyes is because some guy (forgot name) thought that the US was going to have a larger influence on japan then it really did. So the large round eyes stuck.

Also remember that Anime is created by men, for men in general. They look so perfect because that is the creater's ideal girl drawn as a cartoon.
