SMACall to arms
For all it's worth, in the Other Games Forum there's a thread for the ACS Game top List....

http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...04#post1540204

And SMAC is rated lower than CtP...

I've never played CTP. Sadly, I think I DID actually buy it at one point, but never got around to installing it.

I played it a few times when it came out and got so frustrated by the utter illogic of the gameplay and UI, I never touched it again.

Smac is a hundred times better.

LOL, same by me!
I THINK I have a "vague" memory that I did buy it at one point, can't recall why, but in case, I probably didn't even unwrap it when I got at home!!!

I bought CtP, played it for an evening, and exchanged it for SMAC.

I bought CtP 2 a month ago because people said it was amazingly moddable.

I still haven't found a way of modding it to my satisfaction but that will come later I hope.

In your opinion, what is better, SMAC, civ3 or CtP2?

I know you're not actually asking MY opinion, but here it is anyway:

SMAC is a finished product. Richly detailed and highly playable.

Civ3 is still incomplete. I do think it could be a great game when they finish patching it. Could have been better, and I think if there's a future for TBS games, it's what we have to build from.

Never played CTP2. If I can get it cheap, maybe I'll give it a shot.

CtP2 out of the box is even more incomplete than Civ3, thats not to say theres alot of bugs in it, most of the bugs in it most people wont see, but if you delve into the files you can see how much they had planned for it, but never had time.

At least they had the foresight to make SLIC language and all the documentation available to everyone and such an open file structure for editing every little detail.

If CtP2 was as inflexible as Civ3 then i might be playing SMAX now. I still have it installed, but mostly for pinching graphics and stuff from.

My votes went to CtP1/2 because of the modding possibilities, and that includes the mods currently available.

I like both CTP2 and SMAC, but for a chocie between the two the nod goes to SMAC. But to merely say CTP2 is a good game is high praise considering the company it keeps (i.e. SMAC).

It certainly beats hands down the atrocity known as CIV3 and for a strictly historical TBS game as far as I'm concerend the best offering so far in the CIV series (with an acknowledgement to CIV2 as being a great game for its time).

So, you mean I should seriously consider to finally unwrap the copy of CtP2 I bought long time ago?

I have a problem tho: I HATE modding...

Then don't do it. Just download the mods created by others... which, by the way, are varied and excellent!

So, you're saying that CtP2 is, without modding, a complete game or are some mods totally necessary? And what about the immense amount of crashing I hear happened with the CtP series?

SMAC only ever crashed on me once, and it was my fault.

Well, even without mods CTP2 never crashed on me, but it is not a "complete" game without the mods... the AI is horrible, the diplomacy is totally useless... if you want to play the game as it was meant to be played, you'll need mods. And, of course, if you want to improve it too.

BTW, SMAC never crashed on me either. Maybe once. Or twice. Ok, I'll stop.

Same here. Maybe twice .
"CPU not supported" "won't load under insert choice OS here" and other such things you'll never hear from me
I truly believe SMAC runs so reliably smooth on my PC because it is a simple basic old slow, but solidly-built, computer.

Actually, I've bought 2 copies of SMAC. I like the manual so much I thought I had to have an extra should I lose the first. Also, while I'm not the biggest fan of Alien Crossfire I got that with my other copy (Planetary Pack) of SMAC. Maybe I'll get around to playing it in the future.

If not, advertise it here or on e-bay - you'll prolly get more for it on its own than you paid for the Planetary Pack

They are both on a single cd, so selling one of them may be a bit problematic. I think I remember seeing another version of the Planetary Pack though, with both full boxes of SMAC and SMAX. My version is most probably a later version (if there were another one at all, but I think so). It's a single disc with SMAC v3.0 and SMAX v2.0 on it. You select which one you want to play from a menu when starting the game (maybe it's like that with SMAX otherwise too, I don't know).

Anyway, the Planetary Pack I got had both full manuals in it, no lousy .pdf:s there , I really hate it when there are no real paper manuals. I don't know about the States, but here in Sweden the vast majority of games nowadays come in DVD keepcases with a thin (if any) manual. Personally, I can't believe companies still charge as much money for them. For me, much of the glory of a computer game is in a real box with a heavy manual and sometimes a poster (as with Alpha Centauri) of a tech-tree or whatever. Besides feeling much more like a real product, it makes for a nice display if I want to have the box visible on a bookshelf or something.

OMG, I'm starting to feel the need for a third copy of SMAC, just for the manual.
