If you have a vassal that's losing money, do you then lose half of it (because you take half of their income)?

afaik you take a half of their taxes. They cannot "lose" taxes. If they lose money overal, it just means they lose more.

Kasperus is correct. You get half of his tax money (but nothing of his census or treaty income) before any of his expenses are deducted. Thus you get payed before anyone else.
