If you don't like Linux, you can always get OpenBSD

God, Linux sounds just so much more user friendly than Windows. Where do I sign up?
I am a nerd. I use Gentoo Linux. Gentoo is not meant to be user-friendly, it's meant to be used by nerd. But different distros have different usability. You could burn a Knoppix Live-CD, pop it in, reboot and have a fully working, easy-to-use Linux system that quite probably has autoprobed all your hardware up in a few minutes without even writing anything on the hard disk. You could buy a (pretty cheap, BTW) Lindows box from Wal-mart, and never even need to know what the word "kernel" means. And everything in between. Linux can extend to pretty much any environment.

Yeah. What do you get is Linux/MacOS debates (MacOS does usually win, though...)

Macs are overpriced/underpowered compared to PCs. XP is perfectly stable so the whole OS argument goes out the window anyway. And I never found macs stable anyway.

And Linux eh? Cryptic commands, only really designed for the ultrageek, horrendously long installations, and no, I don't give a flying f**k if I can recompile my kernal...

Yes, I also prefer to build my own computers because you can get to choose the parts you put in it and make sure they are up to standard, which I can't do if I buy a computer from someone else. And some of the dodgy tricks I have seen done in the past to cut costs, you know, all this onboard video which uses system memory. I'd rather build my own...

Holey moley, times have changed! I remember back when (like a week ago) this debate would have been much more... ornery!
"you have to pay for everything, meaning the software... where as with a PC you can get pirated stuff a lot easier"
Ludicrous. I've downloaded plenty of pirated games on the mac, Heroes of M&M 3, Civ 2 (when I lost the disc) etc...
The fact that you don't know the proper channels of how to do it on a mac show what a shallow knowledge you truly have of the system.

You can build your own PC for MUUUCH cheaper than a Mac, with superior products. I've never heard of anyone (other than Apple) building their own Mac.

Case closed .

(Also add to the fact that PCs, because of competition have better stuff for a cheaper price, and more games and applications are Windows based, and XP is a stable OS...Macs just can't win).

What you described was Gentoo (or Debian, or LFS, or some other geeky distro). Pick up the latest RedHat or Libranet and call me back to tell how much cryptic commands you had to use and how long the installation took (BTW, remember that with Linux you generally get a huge amount of software when you install just the OS, so please discount the time it takes to get all the third-party software you can't live without on Windows) .

Building one's own mac, eh? It's possible - over in Japan they have hardcore macheads who do it all the time.

The new Macs are pretty solid because they are based off of FreeBSD but in general I'll take my cheap ass Intel based PC over a Mac anyday.

The Macs seem to sell into the niches of graphics and journalism, and also to fanatics who refuse to use anything else. Outside of those niches it's kinda pointless to use one.

Macs are nice.
My only real complaint is that they seem to be getting caught up in style(IE thier mouse, which was apparently designed to hang on a wall.)

I'll never get a mac for the same reason I don't run Linux on my machine right now. I have my computer for mostly gaming. That's it. Mac used to be a gaming platform back a long time ago but they got real dumb and lost that market. It nearly burried them. Now what they have left is a niche market of elementary schools and people that simply own them to ire the PC users.

1 and a bit years and not a single system lockup. In my experience, that seems to be 'stable'. Now I am not going to do an Asher, but credit where credit is due. I certainly never had this from any Macs I have previously used.

Surely you jest.....

In XP the UI is far too complicated and inconsistent. Some people remarked that they don't like Apple's one button mouse - that's fine, a two button mouse with scroll wheel is supported by Mac OS X - but you don't really need a two button mouse to use the Mac OS if you know what you're doing (but some people prefer them anyway).

XP has "wizards".

XP needs "wizards"

Ripped an mp3 lately?

Windows is an ugly and inferior copy of the Mac OS.

Windows Media Player is an ugly and inferior copy of Quicktime.

XP is monopolyware - every person who uses Windows contributes to Gates' virtual monopoly on computing and you don't have to be an economist to know that monopolies are, in general, very bad for the consumer (I often wonder where computers would be if the Microsoft monopoly had been broken in the mid nineties).

Windows will soon be rentware.

XP is not UNIX - nuff said.

and

OS X has much better graphics. If you've ever tried to read classical greek on windows you will know what I mean.

Alright, as someone else inthis thread said (can't be bothered to remember names) we have to give credit where credit is due. The XP User interface is too COMPLICATED?! There wasn't a thing I couldn't do (barring the entire system crashing. Then I couldnt do much)

Considering the alternatives, this monopoly is serving us pretty well.

Actually if you want to go that route we could say that Mac is a copy of the system originally developed by Xerox!

Then we could further go down the line and say that MacOSX is an inferior copy of FreeBSD!

I've never had a problem with it.

Spare me the diatribe. If you want to whine then start using Linux and post over with the zealots at Slashdot. You can't use Red Hat though because Red Hat sold out by actually being successful. Microsoft has plenty of competitors. People don't use Macs because they prefer PC's. Plain and simple.

MAC is ALSO monopoly. Why can't I buy commodity parts for a Mac? For a PC you can even buy an entire system now for only $200! But with a Mac you are forced to use all their damn proprietary hardware. Lack of hardware competition keeps Macs price artificially inflated.

And that's good, because UNIX is a HORRIBLE desktop. Yet XP is an extremely stable desktop.

What did I say? There's the UNIX argument. From my experience, Macs are good for two things, and two things only: Audio and Video. If you make your own, then a mac would be handy. If not, then it wouldn't.
