Constant Crashing
This is the error message I keep getting.

Anyone have any ideas

I can't get past this point in the game.

Does the Comp love the Persians SO much that it won't let me take their last city?

Re: Constant Crashing
Tom, try posting the savegame. Others may try to get past the crashing point on their installs - if they fail, too, you'll know the savegame is corrupted (or, there really is a bug). If they get past there, you may be able to continue on your own.

Can't it is too big.

I will be sending you a private message in case you want it sent to you (or anyone else) directly.

I will not be including it in this message, only upon request.

Thanks

Tom

OK, just for the sake of anyone's curiosity. I got the save from Tom and tried playing it on my machine. It did crash... I was able to conquer the last Persian city, but right after the game told me the glorious Persian were no longer in the game, Civ3 crashed (rather gracefully, I'd say, doing nothing bad to my XP Pro system - was able to relaunch the game and try again with no problems).

Seeing there were lots of Persian military units right next to the city, and having enough Modern Armor to do some target practise, I tried to mop the city area a bit first, wiping out two Persian armies, getting some elites and capturing some Persian artillery in the process... guess what? I was able to take the city and exterminate Persians then! No crash!

Tom has his savegame back (at least I hope) and should be able to continue.

It was perhaps a bug related to the death of Persians, maybe something with their armies... dunno... but if you happen to have your game crashing, try doing what you want to do in a bit different way. It may help...

But often comes back a couple of turns later...

(at least that seems to be case on most of these 'fixes' I have read)

So tomcb, I you could keep us posted

Hello Sir.
I have recieved the saved game and will be trying it soon.
I thankyou for your help and will experiment with the version before I sent it to you and after.
I am please to hear that the Persians did not flood the city with the units that they could.
I was not looking forward to attacking a city with 20 defending units, many of wich were armor in armies.

I have been going through to agonizing process of refinancing my house and working on my start up business, so time has been limited.

I expect to have some time Sun 12th and will let you know what happened.

Thanks again.

Actually, they could not... First, I killed everything Persian that was able to reach the city on the next turn (you had so much Modern Armour there that it was quite easy). Second, once the last Persian city fell, all of their units were automatically removed from the game - that's how it works. Unless you have a settler (and thus a hope of founding a new city somewhere) or a city, you lose all your units and the game, too...

The only problem was to get around the crashing point.

Good luck with your game, Tom!

Well, I guess you will make it even with bad luck , since you totally dominate the game. Perhaps it's time to start a new one anyway?

I played that game awhile ago and saw what you did.
I was hoping not to have such casualties, but I guess it beats a crashed game.

I think it is pretty crummy that the games were released with issues like these. I for hope that MOO3 lives up to promises and is bug free.

Thanks and talk later.

I think it has to do with the armies. You should erradicate the armies first, and then whipe out the civ

Well, I did the re-install before and still, PTW has managed to be the most buggy thing ever on my computer.
I have tried to play another game and it is starting to crash, but this time with no pattern.
It has even crashed when I tried to save.
It is giving almost the exact same detail report too.

Now I understand about the reviews I saw about it being so full of problems, which there is no excuse for in a simply 2D game. It's not as if the graphics are so difficult after all.

Once again, I very much hope that MOO3 is bug free as promised, and yes they did promise that.

hi ,

try this ;

uninstall , look for files after that with names like infogrames , firaxis , civilization , etc , ..... delete those , reboot , reinstall , turn security software down while doing so , get patch , install ptw , get patch , reboot after defrag , .....

that should do it , .....

how long since you have last reformated your harddrive's , ..... try that if the above does not help , .....

have a nice day

I already did the whole re-install thing and my machine is usually defraged every month or so.
However, I did not go searching for files that may have been hanging around.
I guess I can try that.
I will not reformat my drive to play a game that is just plain buggy in the hopes that it will help.

Thanks

hi ,

it does not have to be the game , it can be because of an uninstall / reinstall that is not done correctly , due to a security program , a wrong update , a bug , something with the OS , etc , .... there are many things that can cause a game to be buggy , .....

have a nice day

Well, I was going to wait until the new Nvidia card was coming out before building a new machine, but after finding out it will not be all that much better than w3hat is out there now, I am planning on ordering the parts Friday (tomorrow).
Does anyone know how PTW and MOO3 is suppossed to work in windows XP?

Since PTW is the only program crashing, or has crashed in a LONG time, I am thinking that either it is the game or the install did not take just right or some combination of the two.

I don't know. But if anyone has any information about XP, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks

Well, I have to disagree about price.
Yes windows have issues, but I would have to spend a lot more to switch than I could gain,
Monitors and what have you.
Also, it is a whole lot easier to upgrade a windows machine than a MAC.

Did anyone else hear today how MS is saying they may have to cut the prices of their office suites and what have you because open source products are cutting into sales?

Gotta love Capitalism

PtW runs smoothly under my WinXP Pro. I wholeheartedly recommend that OS. Not just because of PtW, but because it does not crash. Ever. At least for me (running it for 14+ months about 12+ hours a day).

One, it reminds me of video drivers of the graphic card.

Sometimes turning down a notch on the Performance (or acceleration level of the graphic card) can do wonders for any game. Sometimes the graphic card will not work at full acceleration with some, it depends on the graphic card.

hi ,

check out www.apple.com or the MAC hot news thread on this site , you shall see that the prices are bargains for what you get in return , .....

for most AI's the basis is still win98SE , check Soren's profile and follow the link , ......

have a nice day

what is your pc's system hardware made up of ?
how much memory does it have ?
it sounds like a mem problem or....
civ3.exe is corrupted how many times did u uninstall
civ 3 ?? because if u delete the folder that it's in
it will affect other programs with problems.
hope this helps
