Here we are:

This tells you what each port is:

http://english.aopen.com.tw/tech/dow...8xmax-eg-e.pdf

Go to page 4 and it will show you a closeup of the IDE ports.

It looks like you just have 3 IDE ports. I'm not sure why the 3rd one isn't showing up.

The two slots on the right are 1 and 2, and the one on the left is #3. So looks like a total of up to 6 drives then I would think.

What slots do you have filled up?

So, how do I activate them??

or the third channel for that matter?

Current channel 0 HD
ch 1 eugh nothing
just disconected my other drive, It seems to have some heating problems, need a new frontfan. And in the process did the same thing to the writer and cd rom.
Now I don't need/want to put them in raid, but would it be possible to have the following line-up then:
ch 0 HD master
ch 1 HD master
ch 2 writer
I don't like to share drives on the same channel

And btw, thanks allready for all the trouble

It is possible that drivers may help in Windows but still I don't see why the 3rd channel is not showing up in the BIOS.

Those drives have their jumpers set to Master right?

Try filling up each channel one at a time. Start with ch 0, then boot up and see what happens. Once it works okay then attach something to ch 1 and see how that goes. Then when both of those are working, go for ch 2.

I bought a 200 GB Hard drive from Dell (Western Digital) when I bought my new computer.

It failed within a couple of days and they had to send a new one.

The technician had a real problem formatting it due to the 137 GB limitation problem, although he did find a workaround solution as Dell hasn't updated their bios programs to adapt to the 200GB hard drives.

It was expensive (about $260 US equivalent more than the 30GB option), but I didn't find it too too bad - still I wish I had taken the 120 GB option - it might not have crashed and wouldn't have had the bios problem.

Of course, this is going to be more expensive than an IDE RAID.
One of these days I'd like to get some kind of automated removable media backup.

I wonder, if I get a rewritable CD burner, perhaps there is some kind of backup program I could use to do that? I could write a script but that's no fun, especially at home.

If you buy a tape drive, a backup program will be included as well - you don't really need CA Arcserve The good thing about using tape is it has more storage capacity than CD-RW. The bad thing is, of course, it is sequential.

You might be able to pull the same thing off with the Windows scheduler and an archival program. Now if you run *nix, it wouldn't be a problem. You can always resort to Tcl/Expect to automate programs for you.
