best way to play mp

Me and my friend have just wasted 3 hours playing a mp game. It crashed during council and neither of us could save the game. We were playing SMAC and it was on icp/ip connection for directplay.

Whats the best way to play ac on mp? How does PBEM work and does it take ages? Any help would be appreciated.

pbem depends on how many players there are, 2 ppl shouldnt take that long if you're both online abit. When it mounts upto 5+ players though it takes months.

you take a turn, save it, email it to the next player who takes his turn and passes it on.

best way seems to be play first 50-70 turns using ip then continue as a pbem when the turns take awhile.

Thanks for the info, that sounds like a cunning plan!

Another thing, i was wondering whether there are any known problems with playing an ip game with sychronous turns? Does it have a tendency to be more unstable than turn ip?
