The origin of swordhrs.wav: Monty Python
I was watching Monty Python and the holy grail, and I came to the observation that I had heard something before.

In the scene where the green knight is fighting the black knight, several of the fight sounds are vaguely familiar. I fired up my copy of civ2 to make sure.

And aside from the cocconuts banging in the background, Swordhors.wav has two sounds ripped straight out of the movie (a few sounds from one point in the fight combined with a few from a few seconds later).

Interesting huh?

I thought I noticed the same thing a few months ago, when M.P.& H.G. was on TV.

What if both Monthy Python and Microprose just use the same archives for premade sounds?

I've know that since I bought the DVD a few months ago and noticed something strangley familiar... I presumed it was common knowledge, but apparently not so.

Yes, a lot of movies and games use all-purpose effect collections. I remember hearing the same exact death groan from Doom in at least half a dozen movies.

In one of the FW scenarios there's a sound of an explosion, the end of it sounds like some poodle giving a loud bark... I hear that sound just about everywhere on TV, at least the BBC and Discovery Channel have also used that sound in series and "intermissions" etc.

Indeed. One of the most popular collections of pre-made sounds is the BBC one, used in almost every radio drama known to humankind. We used to use a very nice vinyl copy, but I don't recall ever hearing the Civ sounds.
The best one of the series is the horror movie one, which includes such classic titles as
"brain being drilled," or "person lowered into vat of acid" though the "torture victim" really sounded like someone in the bathroom after having eaten alot of very spicy food.
