Importance of ranking - Page 3

DarkCloud has the weird goal of having the highest post count of everyone who registered after him. For now, I know that it's Chris 62 and me who keep him from achieving his goal. Add to this that Chris and DarkCloud himself don't post in on-topic as much as I do, and DarkCloud will likely be forced to chase me for a long time

If I wanted to have more posts than those who register after me/same time would require an extreme posting fit. I am ~14,000 posts behind.

If 14,000 is the gap between you and Ming you need more than that........he is still posting lots per day.

In fact if you post 25/day (never seen any more than that over a period of time) and Ming does 10/day, you'll only close the gap at a rate of 15/day, and 14,000/15 ~ 2 and a half years.

I've only been here for 1.5 year and I lurked for maybe four months before that just checking to see if anyone had anything to say about civ3.

Well the rankings seem very indifferent when you are a King... then you notice that instead of being a distant dream, Emperor is within 300 posts' range... and then someone else awakens to the same fact... and you see that there're so many Kings around you blend amongst them... the ranking system receives new dimensions then

On the actual topic stated in the first message in this thread...

I usually value registered members in 5 different ways nowadays.

1. DLs, whiners, trolls
- not much of any interest for me as they don't tend to post anything good, except for good signature material.

2. posters with statuses like Settler-Warlord
- I pay attention to their posts and value them too, but I'm abit sceptic about their knowledge regarding Apolyton.

3. posters with higher statuses like Prince
- they get attention too, but you also know that they most likely know more about Apolyton than newer members, plus you might more about them, based on all their previous posts. So indeed they have a little bit of a special status for me too.

4. moderators and staff members
- not related to their post counts, but those nasty custom titles.

However they have the highest or second highest status for me on Apolyton as many of their posts are informative.

5. posters that I have other contacts too (mainly SPDT members)
- they have a high value in my opinion and have a special status as reliable persons. However not directly related to their post count rankings.

As the conclusion I could say that I look more at the registration date than the post count. It says more as you know how long the person has been around here. E.g. Frozzy has King status, but I give more value to Spikey's posts as he has been around here for longer. However my personal knowledge and chats with Frozzy has an effect too, so in this case it counts less. However the ones with the "1970 bug" are of course a little bit special as they've been around for so long.

Me and my post count

I'm not that interested in it, but indeed I'm abit upset as I've lost ~230 posts. However I'm although waiting to reach Emperor, despite I'm not trying to post more because of that.

Registration dates can be decieving...

There could be an Emporer who registered in '99.. yet I could still know more Poly OTF history than them.

Personally, ranking means jack**** since OTF posts stopped counting back in Spring 2001.

There are lots of funky searches you can do as well. For instance you can find your position, then search for people with more posts that have posted in the last 6 weeks say.

Go to members. Then do an advanced search, where you can specify joining dates and post counts as variables.

That would be a cool feature......but I have never seen anyone mention a way to retrieve post counts over a truncated period. Might be an interesting addition..........
