Hard Times Succession Game
MGE. Deity, 7 Civs, Raging. Custom map

No special rules. As a wise man once said: "Just win, baby."

Turns: I played 20 - but wandered a bit. Only 12 of the years had anything to document in them. Play 20 at most but feel free to play less, once the game starts moving faster.

Starting techs: Alphabet, Bronze Working, Code of Laws, Currency, Horseback Riding and Pottery

4000 BC: Our brave settlers pull their coats a little closer and explore.

3750: Hut - 50 g.

3650: Woebegone founded. Researching Ceremonial Burial (3 turns/tech )

3600: "Frossssss-teeeee the SnowMaaaaaaan.... wassssss a happy jolly soul..."

3500: Ceremonial Burial discovered; researching Monarchy.

3350: Woebetide founded.

3300: Fish in radius of Woebetide; Warriors rushed so we can start a Settler. Woebegone may have some Settler production problems.

3250: Monarchy discovered; researching Map Making. Oedo year! (STYOM pats himself on the back for his timing skills) We are now a Monarchy. Warrior rushed in Woebetide. This may have to be our Settler city, and we may need as many Settlers as we can get, considering the local topography.

3200: TWO fish in Woebetide radius ... and I just missed the sweet spot

3150: Zulu warrior sighted!

3050: Zulus move away, and we decline to follow them with Woebetide's only defender.

3000: King STYOM wanders away in a blizzard and vanishes. A new king must follow him!

This one may turn into a challenge... or it may be a breeze. I've been surprised before!

Great! And good luck too, La Fayette. When I saw all those techs and the starting terrain... I got nervous.

Anyone else, up to eight?

1. STYOM
2. La Fayette
3. SG(2)
4. Jrabbit
5. Bloody Monk
6. Hydey
7. SG[1]

What a chilly start

2950bc: We discover MapMaking and start researching Trade.
2600bc: We discover Trade and start researching Poly.
Our wandering horseman meets a Zulu settler who asks for 50g . We say ***. War.
2200bc: Zulu phalanx + Zulu warrior die while attacking our valiant horseman who gets vet.
2100bc: WOETHELAKE founded. We discover Poly and start researching Writing.
2050bc: A Zulu warrior marches out of Zimbabwe and gets killed by our horseman#2.
2000bc: La Fayette disappears in the blizzard, with the feeling that there might be some fighting later on

Good turns La Fayette! Nice city site for Woethelake - now I wish I hadn't settled Woebegone where it is. But then again, we are AWFULLY close to the Zulus so it might be a good thing I had 2 cities down fast.

@ SG(2) Feel free to join in ... the current game situation cries out for the RAR (Rabid Aggressive Rodent) approach

@ La Fayette - yes, I suspect that Zimbabwe will be no more, soon after the Ellie in Woethelake is completed Let's hope that we can pry some techs/cash/cities from the Zulus - or at least hope that there is some space on the peninsula past Zimbabwe!

We also have MapMaking.
So, if the peninsula is too narrow... we just play "go west , young man!"

(SGs welcome , I know the Admiral enjoys sailing)

Views cold wastelands, shivers. Not sure what to do, except expand our power base so eventually we can take out the Zulus with style (Zimbabwe is on a river), or become a peaceful Republic.

1950 - Peace with Zulus ... they give us Mysticism and 50g.
1900 - Stokes fire.
1850 - Zulus declare war!
1800 - Woebegone builds Trireme.
1750 - Writing Now researching Seafaring. (Not much choice, the other alternatives were Literacy and the Wheel. If there was a little more production/food Literacy and the route to Republic would be an option as the rivers offer plenty of trade arrows. But at this stage I fear terrain is against us. Wheel ... not over exciting as we have Poly for good attackers. Our capital needs to grow by having a harbour!)
1700 - Pop 100,000
1650 - Woebetide builds settler - Woethe lake an Elephant. Cease Fire with Zulus after they donate Masonry
1600 - Zulus offer war instead of tribute!
1550 Futile attempt to kill our horse on a hill. Fur Coat founded on rivered fur between Woebegone and Woebetide.
1500 - Hut Nomad
1450 - We are now mighty.
1400 - Woethe lake builds settler
1350 - The Admiral sights a stray Barb King
1300 - Woebegone builds diplomat. Accept Cease Fire with Zulus as I'm going to build all over their borders.
1250 - Seafaring Now targeting Construction. Woebetide builds Settler. Cold Harbour founded near Zimbabwe. Frozen Vines founded on wine ... another front line city. Zulus throw in 50g for peace. Hut 25g.
1200 - Woebegone builds Harbour ... it is now growing slowly!
1150 - Whale Woe founded.
1100 - As at the start of this year: 81 gold and researching at a tech every 7 turns. I'm on the next trireme to the sun

Zipped for floppy ears

Seeing that we now have 7 cities and a fair amount of diplomacy/war potential, let's cut the turns down to 15, so as to make more than 2 rotations likely.

No limitations seems a good way for a newbie to be broken into sucession games.

Boring Bunny
boy, I get back from LA and... it's COLD up here!

survey says -- need to explore, maybe find some polar huts. Note that the grass is much greener on the Zulu side of the fence. Also note a black-click city at 68,4. Another note -- every bit of land seen is on continent #1. No WoWs for anyone. No top 5 cities for us.

Checked Civ Score and it said -- in big red letters -- CHEAT MODE. Hmm.

1100 -- Surveyed the kingdom
1050 -- trireme built. Zulus deny tribute, declare war.
975 -- Discover Construction. Choose Literacy over Math and the Wheel. Heading to Mono via Philosophy -- we hope! Decide that new boat will explore our inner wastelands.

950 -- Polar hut found by western trireme yields NONE nomads
925 -- Trireme heads homeward. Vikings start Pyramids. I lose a bit of production when Woebetide grows.
900 -- Zulus offer peace, withdraw troops in tribute. diplomat establishes embassy. They have 2 cities, no techs we need, are "Aggressive" and studying Pottery.
875 -- We grow to 200K ppl. Hut in frozen north yields 25 in cold cash.
850 -- Very little happens.
825 -- Zulus demand we vacate "their" lands.
800 -- We withdraw our troops. Parley with Zulus yields -- WAR!
775 -- Literacy finally discovered. Philosophy not offered. choose Math over Republic and Warriior Code. (We'll need navigation with this starting position...)
750 -- Find Ulundi as expected per black-click survey.
725 -- Make landfall with returning Nomad. Zulus offer 50 GP for peace -- We take it!
700 -- city of 2 Whales founded in hills south of zimbabwe.
675 -- Zulus discover pottery. No tribute, but no war.
650 -- Beads delivered to Zimbabwe from Woethelake. nets 28 GP, and Math next turn.

We're at 7 turns/tech now, and are building camels in hopes of grabbing Mike's when we get to Mono. HG is still out there, though...

Attached file is labeled .sav, but it's acutally a zip... (Hey, it's late, I may be wrong, but it's what I found when I browsed for the file...)

Checked list -- Bloody Monk is up.

First time I've ever seen his name on a sxn list. Must be feeling cocky since his successful Aztec shield-starving tactic.

Eh?
Was this originally the case, STYOM? If so why not resave as a scenario? If not, who has been fiddling?
