I agree. I can't understand why everyone here is so considerate of you, Jrabbit. If you play Civ with Ming and rah, you're bound to have developed a thick skin by now - you can take it

Besides, I took heaps of abuse in past games and nobody apologized

Here is the log.

Looking worse than Theoden King at the darkest, the Lagomorphic One summons Bloody Monk to take up the scepter. After much thought the only natural choice was made...Monk -> Ayatollah.

Lots of tickling/rushing about to begin.

1360 Copper (IronLake to Roskilde) 148g; Gems (FurCoat to StickSpit) 111g...Begin training lots of dips to bring down walls.

1380 Take Kaupang, 66g...Vikings start Cope in Trondheim--AI goes for SSC

1400 Silver (Mt4 to Viborg) 250g...Take Jorvik, 104g and Viborg, 78g. Accept 100g for Peace (Should have passed. Vikings became hard to provoke to war and I didn't want to trash the reputation)
Overnight: research Metallurgy -> Theology

1420 Beads (2 Whale to the Udall) 184g...Bribe Smolensk for 100g net. This was for strategic reasons--to free up movement and provide a launching pad at Trond and Hlad--and probably temporary as this site won't amount to much... Complete work on Leo's Shop

1480 Demand tribute, Viks say war ...Take Trondheim, 155g, Pyramids, and Colossus--and Chivalry, after 2dips drop walls

1500 Bribe Uppsala for 213g net...Take Hladir, MPE, 72g after 3dips drop walls.

1510 Gems (2Whale to Westness) 240g and Silk (Woe t Lake to Westness) 162g... Then Bribe Westness(in disorder) for 124g net and Roskilde for 435g net....Bribe Barcelona for 148g net... Overnight: research Theology -> Sanitation.

1520 Gold (Klondike to Viborg) 114g...Wine (2Whale to Viborg) 105g...Take The Udal, 155g...To the Vikings: Rest in Peace

1540 Take Moscow, 114g

As the bloodlust begins to ebb, Ayatollah Bloody Monk desires to undergo cleansing rituals and calls for his replacement. The realm is poised for continued conquest or democratic trade-fest. Do as you will, Hydey.

Here are some thoughts about the round.

Accomplishments:

--took 14 cities and ended the Viking menace

--Got two advances

--Built Leo's Workshop; JSBach will be ready in two turns

--Increased ending cash balance by 214g

--Built lots of white goods: 12 Temples, 8 Harbors, 2 MP, 3 Aquaducts (+3 started)

--7 new Settlers (+8 in production) to build roads, etc

--I think Fundy was the way to go

Considerations:

--Whale Woe is pre-building its sewer in the form of a colosseum.
Remember to make the change when Sanitation is in hand.

--There is a boatload of killers headed toward Spain. Could take a foothold if their cities are lightly defended; or, it could be a deathtrap. It's a gamble.

--Fur Coat?? What to do?? Platforms are a long way off.

--Smolensk is set to unbuild itself. Do as you will.

--Lots of settlers abuilding. I think they make sense; you may not.

--I like the idea of going Demo and Trading to AC, as Straybow suggested. If you want to go that route, you may want to change the build orders for MT4, 2Whale, and WasZimb.

Awesome job Bloody Monk!

Hydey, don't change the government. After a thoroughly democratic democracy game, I want the chance to go Fundy.

Knowing Hydey and [1], you have little to worry about, obiwan. (Especially since we have SOL and you can change to your favored gov't regardless.)

Good turns Genghis Monk

Games such as this one, which have gone from Republic/Democracy to ultimately rest in Fundy, are perfect for wide scale city celebrations. The science (on the tax rate scales) in Fundy is wasted. Advances come from trade, as caravan beaker bonuses are not reduced in this form of government. (IMHO an oversight by the game's designers) Triggering the next advance generated through trade needs only one Ein.

To gain celebrations jack the luxury rate up to 50/60% for one year - keeping science at 0% - the rest goes for tax. On the next turn most of the empire celebrates. The lux rate can be reduced to around 30% because the extra arrows (from republican type trade) help maintain the celebrations. In the long run it means that with Tax at 70% and lux at 30% the income generated is about 25% more … in addition when freights are despatched the revenue is far greater along with the scientific payoff.

The added advantage is that cities don't need a food surplus (unlike Demo/Republic) to benefit from celebrations. Cities can be forced to celebrate when starving! When celebrations occur their food position can be corrected. [1] is the master of this technique meticulously arranging the workers in every town until they love him

Aaah, the joys of soft fundy...

It just seems wrong that a fundy government could collect as much trade as a democracy, but if the game allows, why not exploit?

No unhappiness due to units and less support payments overall greatly overcome the lack of science, and the necessity of caravans to develop technology.

SG(2),

Thanks for the reminder. I keep forgetting to think celebration when not in Rep/Dem. That would be a big improvement for the realm.

How exactly does the starving city get forced into celebration?? Do you mean that if you max the arrows, the city will celebrate even with a food deficit?? (the food surplus is relevant only for adding pop??)

One thing SG(2) neglected to mention when discussing the use of caravan bonuses to drive science: the bonuses will be the same as those under democracy only if the city is celebrating. No celebration, and the bonus is a lot lower. Thus the added incentive to keep luxuries high.

I'm not SG(2) but I think that's it. I have had lots of cities celebrate without a food surplus - such as my SSC at size 36. Food surpluses are only needed to get growth under Rep/Demo.

This is an observation about two SXN games currently underway, this one (HT), and Nothing Fancy (NF).

--HT is MPGE and NF is 2.42
--NF started 3 days and ~23 posts before HT
--Currently, HT has ~31 more posts (8 adjusted for earlier start)
--Currently NF has ~126 more views (~10% increase)

1) folk with MP are more loquacious??

2) there are more folk interested in 2.42 games??

This is a curiosity to me, though it may be meaningless. What do you think??

Fundies suck. No challenge, no joy—for the player. I guess it's the only thing that can make the AI a challenge.

It could just be that since the NF game is nothing fancy there is less need for creative (bizarre) strategies with the concommitant(sp?) commentary that invariably follows...
