Mutual Protection Pact
In the book it says that if you have a mutual protection pact with someone, you're expected to declare war on anyone who attacks that nation- I would expect some window to come up when my ally was attacked, with an advisor asking if I wanted to go to war or not, but no such thing occurs.
So am I supposed to take it upon myself to declare war? Will this damage my reputation or will my reputation be damaged if I don't do it? The book mentions that if you sign a peace treaty with a nation that's attacking your mutual protection ally your reputation is damaged- maybe that's all there is to it.
btw- does anyone know how to check how your reputation is doing?

When you have an MPP going with someone, this only becomes actives when you or you ally have been attacked on your soil. You will get a pop-up and declare war automatically.

Not really, but you can read between the lines when offering trade deals to others.
(See what they say, when the assistant says'we are getting close to a deal', offer it to the civ, if you get the message ' we know what you have done to X'.
Well, eugh, you get the message

Be careful...
Whenever I make an MPP then the AI declares war on someone the next turn, sure of my support.

Its just doing the same thing you would (or should) do. Its a sign of how good the AI is.

I have noticed the AI in PTW has a similar trick with alliances. Basically I just got suckered into allying with the Iroquois (my neighbours whom I want to stay on good terms with for now) against the Celts (on another continent). Two turns later the Celts and Iroquois declared peace. I strongly suspect the AI used me to force a peace deal - something I would have been happy to do myself.

Best thing is never to make any pesky MPP's. Ever.
Then, if you want help in a war, you're better off asking for an alliance.

I think it's a good principle. In fact it is very rare that I use a MPP for protection; I prefer using them (to be forced) to declare war to an enemy AI with a minimum of impact on my reputation.

Although the best one is:
"Remove your forces from my territory or declare WAR"
They almost always have a few boats in my sea tiles, and the almost always take the bait. This makes my people happier ! !
